Rimfire Tactical

Is anybody shooting rimfire tactical matches? Any where?I thought this would take off due to the fact it is in-expensive to shoot and easy to set-up and run.

Go over to Sniper's Hide and check under 22 RF. I believe they are discussing this competition.

Also, here are a few scenarios I got from another Club:

Below are some of the scenarios we are using. Targets are all 1/4 inch steel plate except the 9x15 are 3/16 thick. We also do some know your limits etc.

The 100 to 250 yard stuff(stages 6 to 12) remains the same for most matches, the 100yards and under is whatever I feel like but normally non-prone with bi-pod.

COF 1-

Standing- offhand position (unsupported) only

Single steel target= 5 inch wide x 8 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~55 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 2-

Standing position- supported,

Single steel target= 4 inch wide x 6 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~65 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots. Mandatory reload.

Use any rung of 6 foot step ladder for support

COF 3-

Kneeling position- unsupported

Single steel target= 5 inch wide x 8 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~85 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots. Mandatory reload

Use barrel as cover. Shoot 5 shots from one side of barrel, reload, then 5 shots from the other side

COF 4-

Kneeling position- supported

Single steel target= 3 inch wide x 5 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~55 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots.

Use top of barrel for support

COF 5-

Prone position- unsupported, can use sling, bi-pod legs must be up

Single steel target= 6 inch wide x 10 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~110 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 6-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 4 inch wide x 6 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~100 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 7-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 5 inch wide x 8 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~125 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 8-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 5 inch wide x 8 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~150 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 9-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 6 inch wide x 10 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~175 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 10-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 6 inch wide x 10 inch tall

Unknown distance = ~200 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 11-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 1/2 size IDPA target (9”W x 15”L)

Unknown distance = ~225 yards

Time limit= 3 minutes

10 shots. Count the hits. No sighter shots

COF 12-

Any position- prone with bi-pod ok

Single steel target= 1/2 size IDPA target (9”W x 15”L)

Unknown distance = ~250 yards

A rimfire .22 LR strikes with less than 200 ft/lbs of energy, while a .223 Remington can strike with 1400 ft/lbs of authority. This can be a notable difference in a situation, but for accuracy practice either are suitable. Cliffy

We'd talked about it a bit at our local range... I kinda got turned off because it seemed some folks wanted to weight it heavily towards 10/22s with 'bullet hose' stages. Seemed like round count was more important to them. I'd still like some 'timed pressure' stages but skewing things towards one gun type, even as ubiquitous as the 10/22, doesn't seem right.

I realize this topic was started back at the end of May, but I wanted to comment anyway.

Our club is going to hold a somewhat "tactical" match on October 24th. I say "somewhat" simply because no one can seem to agree on which direction to go as we have the slow shooters who want to keep things at a slow pace,,, and then we have the faster pace shooters who want something that will pick up the pace...

When it comes to targets - some want all paper, some want all metal, some want both. Some want strict time limits at each station, some want loose time limits at each station. Some want limitations on equipment, some want it wide open.

I tell ya, you can't please everyone and even if you tried there are those that will find something to whine about regardless when it comes to holding even a "somewhat tactical" match.

Personally I'm to the point of telling all the potential October 24 shooters to just forget the whole deal. Here we are (October 9th) and still no course of fire. What a bunch of bull!

Tactical Matches in the right regions of this country will thrive IMHO. Get a bunch of know it alls together at my club and there's simply no knowledge on how to agree to a COF for a tactical match.

My personal preferance is to run the match as offered. You either come or you don't. Probably to late for this even as October 24th is sneaking up fast. I've never been around so many whiners in my entire life until some members started talking "somewhat tactical" match...

Just had to make a comment about this... Personally I think a Tactical Match like what is layed out on this site would be plenty of fun for all.

We shoot 2-3 a year at my buddy's place outside of Newberry Florida. We do metal and paper out to around 225 yards. We have time limits, mag changes, and this next shoot we will be milling.

What is tactical? Every gun or accessory sold seems to have the word tactical added to it. Many shooting events start out in some practical direction and evolve into something quite different. Such as long range hi power match originally were to test the skill of solders. But the equipment used in matches today would never be seen on a battle field. When I hear the work tactical I think of a police sniper who has one shot at unknown distance with a bolt action .308 in perhaps a hostage situation and when its time to shoot its time to shoot quickly. I can understand wanting to have a match with no sighters, and quick shots at different distances. Not sure I understand the mag change. Not anti-tactical but would like to understand the thinking a bit better. I heard we might have a tactical rimfire match at my gun club in November. No details yet. I would much prefer to shoot one of my bolt actions sporters as they are more accurate than my 10/22. But looks like the bolt actions are eliminated in most of the games outlined here.

A mag change is were the COF is over 10 rounds and under time you have to drop a mag and install another to finish the target. Last week I shot a Steel Plate Speed Match that had 30 rounds under time. You were not required to change mags, if you had a hi capacity mag you could benefit from it. It was fun. Next month it will be the Anshutz rifles and such shooting dum-dum lollipops and aspirin at 25-50 yards. Also shooting playing cards in half.

Not a TACTICAL MATCH but our club holds an annual Egg Shoot. The rules are quite simple, you have 10 minutes to shoot 5 chicken eggs with the least amount of shots from any position.

The scoring is 1 point for each egg shot (5 points possible) and 1 point for each shot not fired (5 points possible) for a total of 10 points possible. (ie 5 eggs shot with 5 shots = 10 points, 5 eggs shot with 6 shots = 9 points)

This year we had 3 classes which were as follows:

Rimfire Rifles or Handguns with either Open Sights or non magnifying Red Dot Type Sight = 25 yards.

Rimfire Rifles or Handguns with Scopes of up to and including 9x Magnification = 50 yards.

Rimfire Rifles or Handguns with Unlimited Scope Magnification = 100 yards.

We didn't have any shooters shoot the 25 yards matcfh, but had a few shoot the 50 & 100 yard matches. This year we had a miserable day, 95 degrees with about a 30 mile per hour wind from about 5 o clock.

The winner of the 100 yard shoot ended up shooting 3 eggs with 10 shots. At 50 yards the winner ended up shooting 4 eggs with 10 shots.

Larry

PS we also hold a centerfire shoot using the same rules at 200 yards.

Joe,
I have a suggestion you might consider employing to satisfy the various ideas. First off, loose the "Tactical" theory part completely. This ain't exactly Paintball competitions. At our club, we hold two competitions each month for .22 caliber rifles. The first (on the 3rd Sunday of each month) is Silhouette Shooting where the guys and gals get to shoot at steel targets at 50 meters. That course of fire is 60 rds on a timed basis (not sure of the time). The second competition is the .22 Benchrest group (shot on the 4th Sunday of the month) that shoot 38 rds at 25 yds on both bulleys and flys splint into two groups on the paper. We then have a 20 minute break for resetting targets at 50 yds, plus rezeroing. We then shoot a similar paper target for 38 rds for score and have 15 minutes to complete each segment. We do it strictly for fun and bragging rights.
These courses of fire appear to make everyone happy and fun is had by all.
Just something to think about. Good Luck.

We have started a "rimfire tactical" match in Conover, NC and held our first match this month. It was a great success and we expect more shooters in November. This match is not about speed in any way but a time limit is in place. Bolt actions, semi autos and even single shots can and will be competitive. The match is designed with accuracy and strategy in mind with emphasis on shot placement and "on the firing line" decision making. Info below:
