You need to clean very good between test lots of ammo....Don't look for the best results until after 15- 25 shots with the new lot of ammo
Carbon can build at the end of the chamber after a couple hundred rounds(some do and some don't) Use outboard motor tune up for good results on cleaning out carbon...Good Luck..LT
I agree that cleaning between lots may be the best method, but the difference can be only marginal. For example:
I recently acquired a nice Rem 540XR and just this weekend installed a Sightron scope in place of the old Redfield peep sight. It was a bit tedious getting it zero'ed requiring three trips to the range to get it right. But after some fussing about, I did finally get it zeroed and today fired off seven groups with seven different ammo types to see how it did. Due to all of the back and forth to the range and time constraints, I did not bring my cleaning kit and had not cleaned the bbl for about 100rds while I was messing about with the scope. Once it was more or less zeroed, I proceeded to shoot 5 shot groups at 50yds. I did not clean between groups or ammo types nor did I shoot any rounds thru it when I changed ammo types before printing a group. The results were:
50yds from sandbags
1.) Aquila - bargain ammo. Used for zeroing the gun. Shot about 1/2" at 50yds.
2.) Hansen - 15 yr old std vel stuff that I found in my shooting box. Better than the Aquila. Would shoot most into one hole but always had a flyer.
3.) R50 - 0.279" c-c (good stuff, shot 1/2" below point of aim, but I was still getting it zeroed at this stage. Went up 4 clicks)
4.) Eley Black Match - 0.375" (this usually shoots better). All holes touching, with some horizontal variance due in part to wind and part to crappy marksman. Went up 4 more clicks
5.) Eley Edge - 0.279", same as the RWS but better centered in the ARA bull
6.) Winchester match tgt - 3-shots were grouped at 3/4", so I stopped after that. This is not really tgt grade ammo in my opinion.
7.) Eley 10x - 0.248" c-c (the best today)
All of the Eley and the RWS ammo shot beautifully and I am quite pleased so far. One five shot group with each is hardly a conclusive test but that was all I had time for today. Note: The bbl was quite dirty from previous scope zeroing efforts and the wind was moving my little flimsy tgt stand around some accounting for some of the bullet dispersion. I posted a pic of the best group. And will post another of a short run on the ARA tgt with one shot per bull at 50yds with the Eley Black.
