Right bolt right port, or right bolt left port?

Im preparing to order a new action, and am tossed between the two choices.

Im a target shooter who hunts, and rarely ever put cartridges into the magazine.

Action will be a single shot for sure.

I agree with ↑↑↑↑.
Got my first one a few years ago and anything BUT that seems awkward.

I've got a couple of RBLP single shot actions used for PDs from a bench. I also feel it is more natural. Not sure why it would be any less natural hunting on foot. Except that the technique might be a little different.

one thing to consider is for a hunting gun most people don't wear shooting glasses , and if your a right hand shooter and you rupture a case, the left port where most of the gas, brass, powder residue escapes is a straight shot to your left eye.

I have a RBLP that I like but have also given some thought to the idea of LBLP as a right handed shooter. Might be nice to be able to keep my trigger hand in place throughout the shooting process....just something to think about.

Had not considered this. This is a very legitimate concern.

Load to sane limits and rupturing a case in a no brainer...
I like all my RB/LP's, easy to see the case going into the chamber....

If stalking game I would opt for rbrp if your a right hand shooter as you would hold forend of rifle with your left hand I use rblp for target shooting and I could not see this compo very quick if a second shot is ever required.
Grab your rbrp rifle and act out you taking a shot then act out the need to reload but putting a case in the left hand side of the action.

Cheers Trev.

I dont stalk very much at all. Nearly all my hunting is done from a fixed spot. Its texas, we bait nearly everything

the reason I replied about the safety issue,i witnessed a 6 ppc rupture because the shooter didn't have enough neck clearance. I took him to the hospital. it was a rightbolt left port and his left eye took the escaping brass and powder residue.he ended up okay after surgery. I know have your load right neck diameter right etc etc etc, but everyone is not equal in expieriance and freak accidents happen. the late ed Watson told me once for safety reason he would not have a left port. I think tony boyer shoots a right port as well. I saw that on youtube. left ports are absolutely more convienent on the bench.

IMO, the only use for a RBLP is benchrest. I don't like having the port on the same side as my face, and the idea of having to take my left hand off the rifle to load a round feels unnatural when shooting from a slung position or off hand. RBLP is really designed to be operated rapidly with both hands free. Otherwise, it's just awkward if you ask me. Milage may vary.

To solve this in a BAT SV for dual purpose, I ordered full dual port. Bruce Thom wasn't comfortable initially, but it worked out just fine.
Mine: RBREDP NE
Right bolt, right extraction, dual port, no eject, single shot.
I'm a picker, but ejection if desired could be right or left.
Extraction could also be either side.
SV is a single shot action.

From a competitive standpoint, left loading tips a fired case out the right side.
For hunting I pick fired cases from the right.
The only auto ejection I put up with is standing blade, and Bruce can do this.
