Rifle Support -- Shooting w/ Bipod vs. Big Front Bag

I'm not surprised at the results of this video. Personally, I make a distinction between a performance shoot versus a load development / equipment quality check shoot.

For a load development / equipment quality check shoot, I want to eliminate as many variables as possible because my purpose is to evaluate the load / equipment, not my skills. For this purpose, nothing I've found beats a front and rear bag which gives me the most stable position and mitigates a lot of shooter error. Once I know the load / equipment is capable, I'm done with the bench / front and rear rests.

For performance shoot, I'm evaluating my skills in the manner in which I intend to use the rifle. For me, that means varmint / predator hunting off a shooting cross stick. So, this is the vast majority of range shooting that I do. Off course the groups open up compared to shooting off a bench with a front and rear rest, but this type of shooting enables me to refine my technique, improve my practical skills and determine my limitations.

I see too many hunters at the range who just shoot off the bench and that's it. I guess that's ok if you're hunting deer in the east where most shots are of limited range but if you're hunting long range and / or critters with a small vital area you might be better served spending some range time practicing the manner in which you are going to use a rifle, i.e., shooting sticks or bipod or pack or free hand, etc.

That video is pointless, shooting good groups off of a bipod is requires practice to develop skill. If you normally shoot off a bag you are not just going to slap on a bipod and shoot dime sized groups.

He knows that the bipod is incorrectly set up and he also has the bipod feet in the corner pressed against two different 2x4's but he is testing anyway, why?

I do 95% of my shooting off of a bipod for me it is steadier than a front bag, better control of rifle cant.

Saw this last nite and was looking at all the things he is doing wrong with the bipod. Personally, I can shoot more accurately from my Mystic M-pod F-class style bipod than I can a from a bag such as he is using. I have that same bag and never use it.
