Rifle stock delivery times, is this usual?

Last September,2006), I asked my good friend and gunsmith, Robert Gradous to build a custom rifle for my wife. I hoped to give it to her for her birthday, June 10th. I'm just getting a little antsy because I'd like to have enough time to work up loads for each of the two barrels before I give it to her. Also, I'd like her to be able to use the rifle a bit before hunting with it this fall.

Robert ordered and paid for a McMillan hunter edge on 10/2/06. It has not yet been shipped. When he called McMillan two weeks ago, no delivery time was offered. I called McMillan last week and was also stiff armed. No delivery time was offered and I was told that if I didn't like the response, I could cancel the order. Is this typical of McMillan? or was this just the wrong time of the month for them?

What is a reasonable time to have to wait for a custom order stock? Am I being impatient?

Thank you,
StevenF

Last I heard their lead time was 4-5 months.

It is not normal practice with McMillan to pay until the stock ships, so paying upfront was not necessary.

McM has recently brought a couple new CNC's online for inletting purposes...kind of figured they'd be speeding up a bit...

if they could not give me aroundabout time to expect the stock,or at least be nice about it,i would look else where.one thing i did figure out during my rifle build is they like you to go thru a vendor or you can expect to pay a higher price, but i would still expect an eta,

Thanks for the suggestion, but Bruno's doesn't have the stock I need.

I feel your pain.

Bruno's not having the stock I needed, I called McMillan. And asked for an "approx." delivery time.

Then, which was roughly a year ago. I got quoted 3-5 months for a
"drop-in" A3 Tactical for a Savage 110 W/blind magazine, pad at 13 ½”, 3 studs and painted black.

And I swear the operator I was speaking with twilights with the IRS.

I have read on other bbl's the same complaint about delivery times from them. I can't understand why they are so slow, if they have the number of requests for stocks why don't they buy equipment to make them? Pulse their customer service sucks if you can get an e-mail or a return phone call at all from them.

Steven F - If you'd be happy with a good laminate stock, you might want to check in with Joel Russo over on Precision Long Range Hunter. He's building some dandy stocks. Reasonable prices & reasonable delivery times too.
