Rifle or me - Conclusion

Shooting NYSSL. 22LR standing at 50 feet.

''So the moment you put your rifle on the bench to see why''.

I am shooting along scoring pretty good and I wing one off target into the white. I could have swore I was on the X when I pulled the trigger. So now I put my rifle on the bench and shoot a few rounds and guess what, It is right on as it should be. The conclusion is I SUCK

Who has had this happen to them? lol

2 decades of smallbore silhouette have left me wondering the same things. But plenty of good advice though. You might even make some of it work. It’s tough to read “tone” in posts but I think you’ve already got it figured out.

I can't help but look at the target, I use a 24 power scope at 50ft. I start the season on I4x and advance to 24 or 32 on a steady day. Now peeps are different.
Not really. If you lose track of the cross hairs it has the same result,. shots you cannot account for. You cannot focus on 2 things at once. I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree but it is what it is.

So TRA you are saying watch the cross hairs not the target. I will remember that the next time I shoot.

Give it a try. It may not affect your good shots that much, but it will drastically cut down on those wild fliers. Check that your scope is focused on the reticle properly. If it's not it's tough to focus on it.

Rifles should be like horses....wifey rides horses and I can tell you this: it is NEVER the horses fault!!! She could get thrown off because the horse saw some new object on the trail that causes it to wig out...it is not the horses fault.
I have absolutely had it happen to me, not a horse wigging out. Well, had that happen too, just sayin'.
I was deer hunting with a brand new tack driver of a build once. I was so happy with this rifle, I finally had the really accurate one I was after for some time. I see this real bug buck peering out of the wood line and he is looking the opposite direction. I get the crosshair on him and bang....he doesn't move! I bolt the rifle, he finally sees me and disappears back into the woods, never to be seen again. I couldn't have missed, this was only like a 75 yard shot. Something must have happened to the scope....I go to the range and it cuts the center out of the X.....guess I just cant shoot.

Steel and animals don't have scoring rings on them. Shooting like they advise is a sure journey to flinching.

Interesting perspective, not one I agree with, but interesting nonetheless.

With apologies to the OP (for dragging this minutiae into their thread), the most logical way to find the “truth” would be to survey state, regional, and national off-hand shooters (regardless of discipline) and collect data as to their focus point along with a review of literature.
This would be an interesting contribution to eveyone’s end (or beginning to) the “journey to flinching”.

Oh no apologies necessary, I like to read it all. I don't know if I have a flinch problem or my brain tells me to pull the trigger at the wrong time of a wobble. I know follow through is important.
