Rifle or me - Conclusion

Shooting NYSSL. 22LR standing at 50 feet.

''So the moment you put your rifle on the bench to see why''.

I am shooting along scoring pretty good and I wing one off target into the white. I could have swore I was on the X when I pulled the trigger. So now I put my rifle on the bench and shoot a few rounds and guess what, It is right on as it should be. The conclusion is I SUCK

Who has had this happen to them? lol

The good thing about offhand is I know the bad shots are me.
The bad thing is that there are a lot of them.
I was going to shoot sporterifle until I found out I can't keep 30 shots on the scoring rings.

Random 8s in f-class practice still always leave me wondering.

Like any position, a skill acquired through thousands of rounds of dry as well as actual fire. No one is born with it and everyone needs to practice. A lot.
See the video on the Bulletin page today.

Im not the only one who has had the old pinky finger send one downrange while closing the bolt. Im happy to see the target come back up with any score on it !!

At least it was on paper!! I have done that plenty of times. Like previously stated, Who hasn't would be a better question.

Link,
I have no idea what "NYSSL" is? But having said that and in response to your flier issue, in my experiences of shooting Rimfire Competition and doing quite well, I can say that your issue is probably a combination of three factors....you, the rifle and the ammunition you are shooting. And welcome to the club of "flier criers" as in the years leading up to actually getting into serious Rimfire Shooting, I also fell into the aforementioned three causes of fliers. I say that because I take blame for having first, chosing a rifle incapable of delivering what I sought in terms of accuracy; and second, choosing the wrong ammo that rifle would shoot its best with. So I ended up buying a a new Anschutz that shot competition grade targets,; AND tested every top trier ammo to find what that Anschutz liked the best and that led me to the success I sought. And I never had a flier with that rifle when I did my party. And yes that same accuracy applied shooting an entire box of Match Grade Rimfire ammo, something the inexpensive or none Match Grade ammo will never deliver. Thats just one of the big differences when you use ammo that was costing me $20+ per box of 50 and even $12 a box ammo. Take make a delicacy out of horse manure.

My offhand shooting skills are greatly diminished as I have the dreaded shakes at the tender age of 75. 90% of my shooting is done from the bench using a Sinclair bi-pod or Farly joy-stick front rest. I still use cross sticks for prone BP rifles. .22 rifles demand through testing with many different manufacturers products. My Anschuz MS-64 likes RWS ammo (RWS Target works very well). A BSA International prefers Lapua Biathalon and my Anschutz 1411 prefers Fiochi Winter. In testing over 30 different brands of standard velocity ammo all of them grouped differently and the more expensive types were always more consistant. If you were using ammo that tested consistant at a given range you were most likely at fault. STUFF HAPPENS

In the final analysis, shooting is an athletic endeavor requiring eye hand corrdination, a certain level of physical fitness, breath control, mental focus to adhere to marksmanship fundamentals every shot and the mental toughness to move on from a bad shot. Like any sport, meaningful practice and competition is needed to improve skills and you need to strive for contineous improvement.

I shot competitive pistol for about 30 years (bullseye) at the distinguished expert level but there were days when my bio-rhythm was just off and I'd shoot well below my average. The really great shooters have a lot fewer off days than the rest of us but even those guys aren't perfect.

One word of caution, don't fall into the trap of letting it become something that isn't fun anymore by getting down on yourself or making yourself miserable. It's a hobby, not your livelihood. Celebrate the good days, learn from the bad days, and compete with yourself to get better but have fun doing it.

Stop looking at the target. Learn to call every one of your shots. If you thought you were in the x and the shot was not, you are peeking at the target.

NEVER.....focus on the target, ever.:mad::(

Viewing the target with a spotting scope is acceptable, but never with your naked eyes.

I believe we reach a mental state at time when concentrating on a perfect sight picture when the communication between our brain and our eyes leads to one or the other "lying" to the other. I have seen that happen on occasions even with a benched rifle(hunter for score). And its usually farther from the point of aim that can be explained. The cure I found was to defocus and start over again.

I can't help but look at the target, I use a 24 power scope at 50ft. I start the season on I4x and advance to 24 or 32 on a steady day. Now peeps are different.
We were shooting one day and I got ready to shoot my last shot and I said out loud ''boy do I suck'' then I looked at my buddy next to me and said ''oh wait that's your target'' LOL
