Rifle Maintenance Stand

Long ago I purchased a cleaning stand from Sinclair that was made out of wood, leather with black delrin material. Been looking for another vise with no luck. Not really excited with the Chinese plastic models of today. Just wondering if anyone can give some leads on where to purchase a nice rifle stand. THANKS

You could make one… or two. That way it would be how you want it.

I’ve been thinking about making one myself.

If you have a shop vise, by placing two wooden pads and clamping the rifle by the barrel you will have an a completely safe, immoveable and secure hold on the rifle. I've used this system for over 50 years to clean, mount scopes, and perform maintenance functions. You can angle the rifle at any convenient angle.

I used two pieces of red oak (Home Depot) 3/4" thick cut to fit the length and width of jaws of the vice to form the protective pads. The oak will resist deforming. They last forever and then some.

Check out CTK Precision. I have a couple of his stands. Great stuff, high quality.

Here is the style I like. The butt end goes against the spring loaded section and the fore end goes on the open bar. It’s built to hold two rifles and allows for varying fore end widths.

I have always used a Versa-Vise. I made two soft jaws out of heavy leather epoxied to plywood. The barrel is clamped in the soft jaws and I can loosen the clamp and rotate the vise 360 degrees. By clamping on the barrel there is nothing in the way while I'm working/cleaning on the gun.

What about one I can clamp on to a tripod out in the mountains to hold a rifle to shoot Rockchucks and Coyotes?

Nice!! Where are these available? Or…are there detailed plans available to build one of these? Thanks

I’m not sure if the original designer is still making them. I’ve built a couple myself. I have one that is almost finished. If you’re interested in building your own, send me a PM and I can give you some details.

Make one. My wife will attest I am not Mr Fix It. I made this 30 years ago with a scrap of plywood and a handsaw. The rifle cradles covered in leather and permanently attached. Look a log the front of the green boys you can see the dowel that runs and to end, out of the way, that's the carrying handle. It is glued and screwed, tight as a drum.

I've been using one made from oak from an outfit in ID that I don't see advertising any more. Works well, been using it for decades in the gun room.

But as I do much sage rat field shooting, I need a cleaning station on my truck tailgate to keep my barrels free of fouling for extended shooting sessions lasting a week or more. I used my old USMC Match Shooters box and removed the interior compartments to hold all my cleaning stuff, added two leather-covered pieces for the rifle cradle. It's worked well for 40 years now and is still in use every time I'm in the rat patch.

Nothing fancy, just dependable and portable...

I’m currently using the double PMA stand. Works fine but need to tie rifles in if less than 3” wide. Lead sled works great also for cleaning, scope mounting, etc
Yes, this style of rest really is designed around a flat or near flat stock. Wouldn't some spacers for the front end of the stock be nice...ones that clamped or slipped onto the rest. That would stabilize rounded stocks and be a real boon to users.
