Rifle driving/ steering tips with front rest

With AR10/15-style rifles, with free floating handguards, and typical rifles with free floating barrels rest the center of the handguard on the bag.
With rifles with handguards screwed onto a barrel lug, e.g., Rem 700, center the lug screw onto the center of the bag.
Benchrest shooters rests the fore-stock (handguard) on the bag pushed foreward until front of the forestock touches the stop on the front shooting rest.
Single-shot and Schuetzen shooters rest the barrel on the bag approximately 6" from the end. They have a way to test harmonics using talcum powder on octagon barrels and may work on some round barrels.
Stay away from the swivel studs.

It's all about barrel harmonics, rifle profile, shooting-style, and consistency. Plus, what works for you. By shooting-style I mean if it's a hunting rife you may want to rest you non-shooting hand on the bag while holding the forestock/handguard.
Very interesting! Thank you ! And thank you everyone for all the advice!

As mentioned, if the rifle does not recoil straight back due to muzzle jump then you need to try holding the forend down to gain control. A bipod might give more control than the front rest. On light hunting rifles a large sand bag which cradles the forend often works best.

Snap that rifle up before the shop owner checks eBay! Great price!

O thank you for the offer but I actually already have a few bipods I use.their harris knock offs but they have the swiveling, lock, segmented legs and all that just like a haris and they seem to work on most of my rifles pretty good.
Hope I don't come off rude just didn't take your bipod when I have some already. Doesn't seem right to do something like that.
Not a problem. I'll just take it out of the box.

Some of the H&R’s have a pretty large hole in the butt stock. I have seen guys put a piece of solid round stock in there for weight.

From the looks of it, you have the rest set too far back. You want the gun balances so that the recoil will be straight back ideally.
Actually, I find some hunting guns and ARs prefer it about like he has his. It induces less upward pressure on the forearm and bbl on his.. and AR's, less pressure on the joint where the bbl meets the upper receiver. Do whatever works best but there's some logic to what I'm saying and I've found it to work well many times on these guns. You gotta figure out what they like. A BR rig is a different story, though, for a number of reasons.
