Rifle Cant

Hi All.
Question:
If sight raising blocks are added to the front and rear sights, do these make the rifle more sensitive to cant, if so why?
Trev.

Canting will have more effect as the sights are elevated above the bore of the rifle. There is a simple demonstration of the effect of canting and height of sights: Take a stiff ruler and hold it vertically in front of you. The bottom of the ruler represents the bore line. If you rotate the ruler a little in either left or right direction, with the bottom of the ruler held steady,as would be a rifle that was canted) and notice that the higher you look up the ruler the more off target you are.

While the ruler demonstration is an exaggeration of high power rifle physics, the principals apply. In long range black powder shooting where rear sights are 4-6 inches high, the effect of canting is all too easy to see; that's why you see bubble levels on long range BP guns.

canting, inside of 100 yds may be invisible on the target, if it is not a windy day, but outside of that, if you go to check out your target, it will look to you as if you have been boomeranging shots up there!
