rifle build

I want to build up a 264 win mag...but I have to do it piece meal...S.S. doesn't allow me to go whole hog anymore...I know I start with the action, then which end do I go for...Stock or barrel

I went reamer, barrel, action, and stock last. The reamer and barrel arrived about the same time. The action took longer than expected but the action Smith promptly chambered the barrel. It took a little longer to get the stock sorted out but no big deal.

Surf around on bugholes, Bruno’s, bullet central, etc because they stock a wide range of Bartlein barrel blanks for about the same price.

Rem 700 action is hard to beat. You can spend ALOT more... but not sure you get a dollar for dollar benefit over an R700.

That action will allow you a ton of choices on stock/chassis.

Barrel will depend a lot on what you are going to use this rifle 4. So ... what is the intended use of the rifle? Hunting ? light target gun?

264 Win.Mag , A thumper as well as a barrel burner, IF your intended use is for hunting where you may shoot no more that 25 Rds a year your bbl. and shoulder should last you a life time. Don't forget to add a brake to the Bbl.

It's basically hunting, maybe a little long range target...I'm competing with two of my grandsons who are bragging their 6.5 prc's

Why should I add a brake??...And I'm 74 years old, so my lifetime probably isn't far away, LOL

Hunting rigs shot off the bench.???. Spend the money on a removable muzzle brake/thread protector. Face it dude, we are not getting any younger. every ache & pain we feel adds up. Besides you want to enjoy pinning the grandsons ears back in your old age. Back in the day I had a 22-250 w/ a muzzle brake, that rifle could shoot! Mike in ct. PS: I really like the old 264 win mag. I hope yours shoots as good as the first one I played w back in the 1970's.

Your right about the aches and pains.....I wanted one ever since the late 50's, and bought everything but the 264 over time….And yup, I do want to pin the grandkids ears back....I'm tired of them hoot'n on the old man...Probably will get the break...

Will you be loading your own ammo ?

He probably better plan on it if he wants to outshoot someone. The 264WM is one of those cartridges that while it has a belt and is supposed to headspace off the belt, it always shoots best if headspaced with properly resized ammo that fits the chamber.
I have said this before and here it is again...when I decide to build a rifle or I am employed to build one for someone else I always start with the game hunted and the bullet I will use the most. That dictates the twist and contour for me.
I don't care for brakes. I'd rather take the recoil then that ridiculous back blast concussion and noise. "Accuracy" money is better spent on a 700 having the firing pin bushed.

There are alot of used 6.5 barrels out there from when we all shot 6.5 x 284...usually straight 1-1/4"..most 30" plus....find a gunsmith that will turn and shorten then rechamber... the 264 mag.is a devastating hunting rnd.
OMHO..
