Rifle build opinions?

I am thinking about building a rifle for F/TR.

My plans are:

Stevens 200 Action
Ken Farrell 1 piece base
Rifle Basix SAV 2 Trigger
Single shot follower glued in.
.223 1 in 7 Tru-Flite Barrel
Choate Tactical stock
Sightron 8 - 32 or 10 - 50

Do you think this setup would be worth building? Do you think it would be competitive as along as the shooter is up to par?

This will be my first F/TR rifle.

Thanks

What range would you be shooting? That makes things different for 223. Chamber and twist for the heavies if 1000 is in your plans.

I shoot a 223 at 600 and have some decent scores untill the wind shows up.

Your base should be a 20 moa. If it was me and I was looking at a Sightron it would be the 10-50. I think the setup would be worth building, and yes you could be competitive if you are up to par, but when the REAL-GOOD shooters show up, tighten up. ;D Have fun.

I will be shooting anything from 300 - 1000. I know there are better calibers for 1000 yds but around here a .223 will allow me to do load development without going to a range every time. My other option is to start with a stock Remington 700 action. Which would be the better choice. Price wise I am looking at around 300 or so around here for the Stevens 200 or 400 for a stock 700 action or 600 for a blueprinted 700 action.

Thanks

Around here I can also use a .223 in the woods as long as I have a hunting license for Coyotes. It will allow me to get practice time in and load development instead of having to drive a couple of hours to the range all the time. Also for me the .223 is cheaper to shoot. Maybe I should go with the .308 but I kinda like the small caliber.

Stick with the savage/stevens action. You can then easily change to 308 with a simple barrel change and a new bolt head.

Run at least an 8 twist so you can shoot the 80 SMK's or other heavies. 77 SMK's are great out to six hundred but hard to keep sonic at 1000.

I shoot a 224 TTH with an 8 twist and shot a 2 " group at 600 yrds the only time I grouped it at that range with 80 gr SMK bullets. I think you might be better with an 8 twist than a 7. The 8 twist will shoot liter bullets better than a 7, but if your never going to shoot them that won`t matter.
