Rifle Basic Trigger Install questions

I just installed a Sav-2 trigger in my Model 12. Everything is good except one thing. If I close the bolt too hard, the trigger will fire. Now, is the only way to stop this to increase trigger pull weight? I do not have a scale capable of the mere ounces I need to measure pull weight. My thoughts are to increase pull weight until I can safely close the bolt without the firing pin being released. Any and all help is very appreciated.

Thanks, Adam

I have the exact same problem with this trigger. Hope someone has a fix because i cannot get anywhere close to the advertised lowest pull weight for this trigger safely.

Ive never seen a savage trigger that doesnt do that when you even approach the advertised weight. You have to increase pull weight and close the bolt easier/slower. Youve found the achilles heel of the savage

I can close the bolt normally and it is fine. If you use too much pressure closing the bolt, that's when there is an issue. I'm sure that I will be fine with the operation of it, but I would like to know if others are using their trigger the same way.

I have my SAV2 set at around 4 ounces and it works great most of the time. If i get in a hurry closing the bolt it will release. Once i got use to the difference in triggers and stopped closing the bolt fast i haven't had any more problems.

**If i adjust the trigger up to around 6-8 ounces it works flawlessly. However i prefer to have a lighter trigger pull so I have learned to close the bolt easy and it works fine for me.

I don't think that I should have to worry about closing my bolt too hard and having the rifle fire unintentionally. The trigger should be safe no matter how hard I close the bolt. That's my issue with it.

About ten years ago I put a Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger in my Model 12. The trigger pull was a big improvement. It has been 100% reliable and consistent. I have been able to set it to a lower pull weight than the accutrigger, low enough that I can shoot the rifle free recoil without the trigger pull upsetting my point of aim. Sorry, I don’t have a trigger pull gauge so can’t say exactly what the pull weight is. All I can say for certain is that it is slightly heavier than my 2 ounce benchrest triggers. And it has not produced any accidental discharges or failures to set as long as I have been using it.

I must acknowledge that the Savage bolt and trigger design will perform best with lubricant applied to about a dozen different places on the bolt and trigger mechanisms. After that, all bets are off considering the savage trigger design is a complete disaster for target shooting purposes.

When set at 7 to 8 ounces my SAV-2 trigger has a consistent pull weight and will not fire when the bolt is smartly closed. Had the same problem as the OP when I tried to set at the minimum advertised pull weight.

Mine works fine for a while and then all of a sudden the trigger will stop cocking. I'll then have to take the gun out of the stock and adjust the trigger. It's always the bar that the sear sets on will be raised to high and not touch the sear. Really annoying when it happens in the middle of a string at a match. I have found no way to safely use this trigger and will never use a Savage action again for a build because of it.

Are you using the Savage Accutrigger or the Rifle Basix ?

Rifle Basix Sav-2

I am pretty sure you don't see those with jewels closing the bolt hard when set in the low ounces. Just the nature of the animal. You are target shooting not hunting.

Proper sear adjustment on the Rifle Basics trigger fixes this problem. I have several, most set at 4oz.

I have adjusted the set screw and locking nut on the sear adjustment. The problem is, when I cock the action, the sear doesn't fully seat onto the set screw. Instead, it is half way between the bottom of the set screw and the part that releases the sear. This is the problem.

I believe the sear adjustment isn't working correctly and this is why if I close the bolt too hard, the rifle wants to fire.
