Ridiculous Primer Pricing

Our shooting hobby won't be ending. The supply of components is warehoused by those who planned ahead. I have enough stuff for 2-3 years of LR BR competitions. Most guys that I compete with are similarly stocked. We buy what we know we will need when it's available. That means a jug or two of powder one time, 2-3k primers another time, a good supply of bullets and brass the next.

The companies making powder and primers aren't scaling back production, the shortages are driven by panic buying. The key is to make sure you have enough stuff for these common cycles of shortages. Those who don't plan ahead will be left out.

Fortunately I am pretty well stocked with primers. I understand that when supplies of anything get short, prices go up. However, there is a diiference between "market pricing" and "profitering" or taking advantage of a situation to line your pockets. As consumers, I think we all should have long memories once we are back in normal times (if that ever happens) and remember which suppliers, took which approach.

Yruno I do!!

I have a good supply of Fed 210 & 215 m's along with Winchester's, but was short on CCI's.

I was picking up a new rifle at my Smith's. He had 250 CCI's and BR-2's in stock for customers, so I helped myself, along with some more N-565. Prices were just slightly above normal, but no hazmat or shipping.
Unfortunately, no SR primers.

No price is really ridiculous until you actually pay it. Everyone is free to decide for themselves how badly they want something and how much they're willing to spend to get it. If no is willing to pay those prices, the sellers will not sell any. They then will either lower their price to a level potential buyers are willing to pay, or again, they won't sell any until they do. It's called "supply and demand" and it's a critical feature of capitalism.

In my ongoing search for SRP's, I stumbled upon this a a half hour ago. Vance Outdoors.

No on line orders are being taken, but they are showing them in stock at the Lebanon, Ohio store if any of you are within striking distance.

If this is legit and you do happen to get some, please keep the messenger in mind. I could use some too. Maybe we could figure out a way...

Too bad they don't apply the same price control measures for primers as they did for toilet paper.

I am pretty sure ebay does not sell primers or powder.

What would be a fair price for br-4s,cci450's,fed match large and small primers? I do need toilet paper first of course....lol

Today, a fair price is what you're willing to pay.

'Spot' pricing like on gunbroker seems to be around 20c/primer. If you haunt retailer sites like Midway, Grafs, etc prices are close to what they were a year ago. From what I've seen reported, primers, especially SRP, completely sell out in ~ 15 minutes. [I'm guessing that a good amount of the ones bought show up on gunbroker].

One thing about pricing. If you want to be able to find the product in a time of limited supply, the price needs to go up enough that only those who really need it will buy. If primers continue to sell at $40 a thousand, as soon as they hit the shelves they will be bought by the first person who sees them and that person may be buying them to resell or to have "just in case." If they were priced a $80 or $100 a thousand, then the resellers and hoarders may well pass.

I saw that several years ago at a gun show during the .22 LR shortage. At the time the going rate for 500 was $20 a box. There was ONE vendor who had some in stock and was selling them for $35 a box. He said they priced them that high just so they wouldn't all sell out immediately and people who normally missed out could find them.

Unfortunately, there is more than market going on here.

1. People buying/bought 20,000 of something that they previously bought 2000 of at a time.
2. New orders for #1 above.
3. Same for powders and soon for brass is/will be happening.
4. Retailers taking advantage.
5. Wholesalers buying what they can or not letting go of what they have in stock, waiting for maximum profit.
6. Fear of government purchases of same for supposed military use (like ammo).
7. Government restrictions that people feel are coming, i.e. ownership of weapons, powder, bullets, primers and cases that would be newly purchased. Politics getting in the way of enjoying one's legal activities.

I don't mind a free market and, in fact, support it, but not one that is controlled or manipulated.

If you are not supplied well enough now, then it is on you. This stuff has been building up for many years. Our country is going to crap and people should be planning in advance. Snooze, ya lose. I doubt that the primer thing will change for another year-if ever.
