richard's microfit stocks

I'm not sure I would say they are for the professionals, they are for someone who likes to work with wood. That doesn't take a pro, just someone with patiance. If you like to work with wood and not have to start out with 60 grit sandpaper contact Jesse at CRS. Light sanding and minor fitting is all thats needed. Send him your blank or buy one of his.

I have no complaints with the unfinished Richards Microfit stocks used in my builds, but I approached their use with the expectation that I would invest 8-15 hours of my labor to properly bed and finish them. If you are not prepared to or do not desire to expend your time and labor in such a project, they are not for you. If you want a stock with the heavy lifting done, but requiring several hours of fine fitting and detailing, they are a good deal.

I agree with this... if you expect to have some work to do, they are a good deal. Some crazy people might even enjoy that work!

Now, replace the word "crazy" with "highly skilled"!

I buy something from them every 3 years, it takes that long for me to forget what it was like.....still got another year ;D

i went with tommy shurley's and what a BEAUTIFUL piece of art! there is no way i can polish the surface any smoother...just like he said. delivery was barely over a month and it was inletted for my stiller predator action. i ordered a thumbhole style and it fits my hand as if custom tailored. cost a little more but worth it.

I hired my favorite gunsmith to pillar bed a project. When the job was done, he said "Not much microfit to that piece of wood". He said he would have bid the job higher if he knew what he was getting into.

There are better options out there in my opinion.

Are all the outside cuts done on the stock from Richards, like the loading gate, safety cutout, trigger guard?

Picture a railroad tie, but in roughly the shape of a rifle stock. I'm exaggerating, but what is FACT is that my buddy John Young (now of Juneau, AK) and I burned his Richards Microsh*t stock in my fireplace. It was that bad. Burned good. You'd be wise to avoid them. But if you're a glutton for punishment, go for it. ;D

Here's a recent project that is almost finished...This is a Richards that was on the bargain list. I paid $130 with the buttpad and sling swivels installed. For what I have into the stock, I'm very happy with it. It did take a tremendous amount of time for an amatuer and there are still some slight imperfections. The outside was ROUGH. For the money invested, I'll keep it though.

I am compelled to respond to every Richards thread. I spent about 5 hours shaping the outside of a decent piece of walnut only to find the inlet was so far off I couldn't use it. No return at that point so I would have to fix the inlet, fill gaps with bedding, and paint over the walnut to look respectable.
I keep it as a reminder not to buy again.

One of the reasons why I prefer a non-inletted stock even in a fiberglass stock because then I can only blame myself.
