Reverse Taper / Muzzle Weighted Barrels

Wondering what the general thoughts on reverse taper vs muzzle weighted barrels is?

trying to rebarrel an Anschutz that I have and have options for both reverse (Benchmark) and muzzle weighted (Lilja)

Purpose: standard class silhouette and F-Class.

I've had or I still have one in 6ppc with a tuner. I have spent no time with it. It is a Shilen, so I can't help you.

Anybody..?
Ringer,

The late Bill Myers was a big supporter of reverse tapered barrels. He started a trend and many shooters used reverse tapered barrel back about 10-15 years ago.

Just recently a Vudoo finished in the top 10 at the ARA Nationals with a reverse tapered barrel. As a matter of fact nearly every IR 50/50 sporter has a reverse tapered barrel, including mine.

So there is much evidence that reverse tapered barrel can work, but that doesn't mean they all work. The same can be said for all other contours.

With all this said, if you can get a good deal on a reverse tapered barrel, go for it. You have just as good a chance getting a killer, as with any other barrel.

Tony, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it thought the reverse contour placed gradual choke from breech to muzzle?

Keith,

That was often said back in the day.

Going back even further we had the Time Precision rifles with very deep barrel fluting. The flutes started at the breech /chamber end very deep and became gradually thinner toward the muzzle.

That was also thought to produce taper inside the barrel.

The only thing I can say for sure is I have had some really good reverse tapered and deeply fluted barrels.

But on the other hand I've had some really good straight (no contour) barrels as well.

And we don't need to remind me of all the duds I've had in between.

If it had the reverse contour cut on the OD after the putton was pulled you may get the tapper tight at the muzzle. Quite often the ID will grow when you remove material from the OD.

If it had the reverse contour cut on the OD after the button was pulled you may get the tapper tight at the muzzle. Quite often the ID will grow when you remove material from the OD.
