Retumbo in 243ai

Anyone using Retumbo in 243ai behind 95 to 107gr bullets? If so how does it compare with H1000. Thanks for any feedback.

I'm using Retumbo behind 107 SMK's with great results, still a little slow you get that carbon build up around the necks of the case but velocity and accuracy are pretty dang good! how it compairs to H1000 I couldn't tell you since I have not tried any. Later,

Kirk

I'm seating the bullets long 2.885" puts them .010" off the lands in my chamber. Here's my load but please work up to it! it may blow your rifle apart.

Winchester brass
Federal GM210M Primer
Retumbo powder (49.1gr.)
Sierra 107 SMK
COL 2.885"

This is from a 27" 1-8 twist Kreiger but my velocity is 3049fps. @ 70 Deg. Hope this helps out a little. Later,

Kirk

I doubt Retumbo could completely burn-up in a 6mm case before it blasts out the muzzle. Should create quite a muzzle signature, yet Hodgdon H4350 is well within a better Burn Rate 6mm wise. Alliant RL-22 is the S-l-o-w-e-s-t powder I find suitable for heavy .243 Winchester bullets. Alliant RL-25 drops velocity sharply in any 6mm application I've tried to date. BUT the recoil becomes extremely mild. I've had poor success regarding RL-19, so I'm currently working with RL-15. Cliffy

No muzzel flash from my rifle, then again a 27" barrel gives the really slow Retumbo plenty of time to burn. I have had good luck with Hybrid 100V and have yet to get into the RL-17 didn't have great luck with getting the H4350 to group but it didn't leave the carbon ring on the necks of the cases. I'd be interested in hearing your results with the RL-15! I shoot RL-15 in everything else so having 1 powder on the bench would be awesome! cliffy please if you don't mind PM me your results. Later,

Kirk

I got similar velocities between H4350 and H4831SC in my .243 Win shooting 95 grain bullets. Accuracy was a hair better with the H4831SC. This was in a factory 24" barrel.

Retumbo and RL-25 are similarly TOO SLOW burning for proper 6mm applications: Try RL-22 for better results in ALL heavy bullet .243 applications. Cliffy

Thanks much for the advice but I'm simple and it works for me so while there may be better ways to skin a cat the way I am doing it now seems to get the cat skinned. The only complaint about my load with Retumbo is the carbon ring around the case neck but the results I'm getting I'm pretty sure I can live with the carbon build up. Again thanks but I'll stick with what I'm using. Later,

Kirk

Hi Kirk, try a one pound canister of Alliant ReLoder 22 (RL-22), and you'll be converted to smooth recoil, enhanced velocity, and truer accuracy over RL-25 and Retumbo powders. I've worked with RL-25 and found sluggish performance regarding 6mm application with 105 grain Speer Spitzers and 100 grain Nosler Partitions and Speer Grand Slams, yet IMR 7828SSC advanced my bullets downrange almost as fast as RL-22. H4350 is a bit hyper regarding 100 grain accuracy in a 24" bbl. .243 Winnie Pooh. I don't have an AI, but I see too little difference in cartridge capacity to create a huge velocity difference. I use CCI 250 primers and MagTech 7 1/2 primers. Cliffy

cliffy, this load I have is really working out well but if you are speaking this highly of the RL-22 I may this spring give it a whirl! I'm not worried about getting the thing to shoot faster I really don't know how the SMK's will hold together and 3049fps is what I'm pushing them now. I'm open for change but I just got 8# of Retumbo, I'll give it a shot next spring cause if it gets better than it is now the rifle will be real boring to shoot! Later,

Kirk

Save the Retumbo for your .416 Rigby heavy loads, as that is great powder for heavier bullets. Please try RL-22 with 100 to 115 grain .243 loads, as you will appreciate the difference. Powder that is too slow-burning is rarely right for the application. I learned the hard way to suit my powder burn-rate to my bullet application through thousands of mis-spent experimental rounds. Since I'm a hard-head, I deserved the cost of every one of those rounds because I've always learned the hard way. cliffy

I'm with Cliffy, RL22 shoots really good in 243AI
46.5 RL22 105 Amax, 28" 7.5 twist rock tube, BAT vr gives me 3250fps
H4831SC is good too, same charge; slower speeds but cleaner
