Retirement, pros, cons, opinions and advice

I’m approaching retirement. I’ll always be actively doing something, I’m a contractor by trade and I don’t ever see myself not having a project in motion but having said that I’m looking forward to a lighter work load. If I want to go fishing, call coyotes, look for arrowheads it will be nice to have the freedom to do that when I want to do it.

Many of you are retired, you’re experiencing that stage of life now. So my question is what are the pros and cons of retirement. Many would say there are no cons but I’ve seen people in my own life who were not happy in retirement. I’ve seen others who became stagnant and lost their physical and mental sharpness. I’ve also seen the opposite, many who have flourished and seem to enjoy a high degree of peace and satisfaction.

If you were to give your opinion on the pros and cons of retirement what would you offer, what would you advise.

I know everyone has a different set of circumstances, finances, health, everyone’s path is their own but I’m curious what pointers or advice would you offer?
It was tough at first for me because of work ethic and habits, give it time and find something else to do. Family, church, hunting, shooting, photography anything but work stay busy and stay happy.

I would never retire. Sure retire from your demanding job but find a reason to be be responsible and accountable to someone else going forward. I have seen too many men retire from military, government service or construction and be dead within 2-4 years after they retired to their favorite cabin on the lake.

Make sure you still have purpose and routine!

I have made and lost a fortune 3 times and now have nothing and likely will continue on that way. That said having seen the world from the top, bottom and side I have seen a lot. Most people see 1 maybe 2 perspectives in a life time if they are lucky! Purpose, accountability and responsibility keep are to a man what motor oil, fuel, air, spark is to an engine!

Retirement day trip today…

Delightful 55* up high

Traveled from 6K’-10K’ and back

Coming from low elevation areas ?

Be sure to climatize before exerting yourself at western elevations

Well folks here is some 'retirement' for y'all: In the last 60 days wife and I said lets go have fun until we cant! I am 65 and sge is 70. She is fit I am not lol.
In order of dominos falling - bought choice F350 King Ranch and 2025 5'er beginning of April. After that, sold motorhome, camp trailer, my house, my truck all overnight for current market value. Hammered 4 sale sign outside of house and next morning had a couple knock on door with checkbook.

In 2 weeks will have our goodies in climate controlled storage and hit the road in a 35ft Rv seeking out the 50-75 deg temperature gradient in conservative rural areas. Have enuf cash in the kitty to not think about it and live well but not extravagant.

I have no faith in our lovely country's financial future so prefer to be mobilized to seek out those pockets of sanity, wherever they might be.

I will be shooting and reloading along the way. Have that figured out so good to go!

i suppose you guys will be coming through the MidWest on your way to DC -Har:D- —you can stop and visit— let me know—

I will always have enough to buy one last bullet! My choice will be to die in a meadow and not in a wet bed.
Im sorry to read this, there is a life better than this, but when you cheat you creator, thats becomes in question. I believe he put me here, and only he gets to decide how i leave here.

I look back at the life i lived, and question why he has blessed me the way he has. I cared for my father who died with cancer his last week's suffering and it truly scares mm knowing how he suffered, and the things i may pay for in the end days.

But one thing i cant do, is tell God after the life he has allowed, how he is allowed to take me!

That decision will be his, as I have to believe telling him I dont care for the way he chooses me to leave this life, in the final minutes is not his choice. If pissing myself is what he chooses, just maybe its because of some of the choices i made, and I can't imagine what not allowing him to make me pay my dues for things I chose over what he instructs, he will do when i finally meat him. But one thing is for sure, i will pay for them, and if i take my life from his choice how he takes it, just how will i pay for that as well, when i do meet him?

And we all will meet him, make that last choice Wisely!

I will dearly miss the Brookings of the past, and its Mediterranean 'banana belt'. climate. But what I will not miss is the plethora of junkies, meth heads, out of state criminals and vagrant dirt bags living in junker motorhomes or tents who have systematically inundated and destroyed our county over the last 4 years.

The Oregon liberal political social experiments back fired on them so they are now luring away their unwanted wildlife to low income far away rural counties with minimal law enforcement. And being on the border of high law enforcement California just exasperates the situation. Brookings has best climate in the entire PNW for outdoor living so double whammy.

My county has a population of 20,000 in 2000 square miles, or 1.5x the size of the king ranch, and we have 2 sheriff deputies on patrol in the day and none at night and no dedicated jailer. We also have 2-3 state troopers for the entire county. The state has only helped by recently completing the largest and only 3 story building in town, a giant 'human resources' welfare building. And the state just purchased the largest private building in town with plans to turn it into a methadone clinic. That was the 'last straw' for me.

For those who don't know, Oregon de-criminalized the possession of narcotics in 2021. This was a magnet for out of state drug addicts who were tired of getting bruised, arrested and deprived of their drug by local police. Gambling addicts move to Nevada and .....

Not to change the topic of this thread but western Oregon will be seeing my tail lights real soon!

I believe this is the way God has instructed us to do also.
