Retirement Project — Shooting Bench Canopy

I retired May 9th. First project was to build a canopy for my shooting bench. A couple of trips to Menards and a load of class 5 hauled in, and now a little paint and it will be done. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I will get it done. I went with a wood roof to have less twang.20240518_205553.jpg

first off Congrats on your retirement!!
looks good,, need to hang a drop down blind to block the sun , if it applies .

i went a little different route and built mine so i could move it with a tractor
it's a 6X8X8 with 12 volt power for lights /fan etc .. with a solar panel on top .
it's fully insulated inside now .

I've never built anything except a birdhouse or 2. Are there plans or kits I could buy to build something like these?

Thanks

It would be easy to put sides on it if I decide to go that route. I have rubber roof liners that will go on the roof. And I also will double it and put on my bench. To stop the rifles from jumping like on wood or concrete.

I have never built anything with plans. I just think about what I want and do it. I'm 3 miles from Menards so when I'm walking around in the store the cogs are turning in my head on what I'm going to do next.

That's a great upgrade that the OP has done for his shooting! My range is the lenght+ some yardage on the pond dam at my son's farm. I've discovered a concrete slab that is 135 yards from my target. It was overgrown and may have been an old shed floor at one time. I've already decided to move my shooting table up to the slab and now I have ideas swirling in my head about building a roof over it........ and sides......and a solar panel to power a fan....... the rabbit hole is DEEP!

The shooting bench and cover looks good . Congratulations on your retirement. I recommend it to anyone that can afford it.

Helped a friend build a similar firing range roof. He added a couple of those roll-up bamboo screens to a couple of sides. Mainly to block the sun to keep it off your back-side at different times of day and/or seasons. Screens are found in the garden section of Home Depot.

If I had property for a bench/range setup, I would at very least want to be able to make seating depth adjustments at the bench(likely load there also).

I ordered 2 for the sides off Amazon and will buy a ten footer for the back. That's a good idea.

A good idea. You will definitely need some protection from the sun. I used stuff I had on hand.
