Results of my first build

Back in January, I started a build of a custom .308 Win. I started with a Remington SA action. (source via the Forum).

I received the final product three weeks ago. I have been to the range twice, and I am very impressed.

My gunsmith, Pete Pieper (Precision Barrel Works), did a great job of completing the build from the parts that I assembled. He kept me informed through the entire process and met my expectations every step of the way.

My new .308 is shooting >.5" with commercial hunting ammo. Surprisingly, commercial match is not shooting quite as well. The 24" Broughton barrel produced muzzle velocities about 100 fps better than what is advertized on the box. I am really excited about what the possibilities are with careful load development.

Pete's proprietary muzzle break is awesome...recoil is significantly reduced.

Bottom line...I just let Pete know that I have ordered a 6.5mm barrel for my next build.

It's too late for 6.5mm that you just ordered, but,,,,,,,,,, might have been nice if you'd have asked Pete if he'd order the barrel for you. If you're ordering directly from the barrel maker you're, most likely, paying retail for it. Petes' (or any gunsmith) license/need to purchase from the same barrel maker for accumulated quanity price breaks has got to be good for something. An honest guy, like Pete, won't charge you more than retail and he'd make maybe 20 bucks, 'ta' boot'! If you're happy with your gunsmiths work, the best way to let him know is to give him the opportunity to make a few more $$$$$ on some of those component parts that you'd pay retail price for, anyway. just 'food for thought' Condrads on your new rifle.

I asked Pete about ordering the barrel for me. He said that he didn't care one way or the other, but that he generally like the customer to order so that there is no misunderstanding about barrel specs.

I am on the road for the next couple of weeks, so pics will have to come later.

I have known Pete Pieper for close to 20yrs. He does excellent work and is a very honest person.

I really enjoyed working with Pete. He has a great reputation out at Bayou Rifles...my home range. I plan to do my long range qualification with this rifle. Of course, that means that I have to shoot up the the capabilities of the rifle that Pete just built for me!!!
