Results of first day groundhog hunting 2024.

The pictures will tell the story, hunting along the Mohican river in Ohio bean fields , 2 inches just coming up the hogs were dug in on the treeline and some in the fields,I saw 20 groundhogs I shot at 10 and dropped drt 9,the miss was due to wind gusts that threw my shot off the 17 is wind sensitive.My closest shot was 155 yards,my furthest 275 if you look close one can see the depths of the fields. The large maple was a great hiding spot. Only one gh slid in his hole after being hit but is drt despite sliding down a foot.The 17 hornet is not to be underestimated if you hit what you aim at,this field is 200 acres I only hunted in 20,but the season is young.No complaints here,the silver Toyota in background is my truck the gh way out there is at 275 yards.addendum pictures are below.

Sorry that question is out of my area of expertise, I can kill a half dozen gh's by the time I researched that,but that's just me , when you've been killing gh's since age 7 you learn a few things along the way. Good Luck!

That's why I asked, I know of no gh hunters here. Just people trapping or shooting near buildings. Wondering when is the best time/weather conditions to go spotting fields.

He's happy been hunting there sometime, this place by seasons end usually produces close to 100, but the more you take the more wary they get and the sneakier you have to be, as mentioned earlier the suppressed rifle gives me an advantage. I won't have any shortages of targets when I factor the other farms in that county i've secured over the years over 5000, can't hunt every acre for sure,with work and all but on days off it's 8 hours or more weather dependent.

That's a great area to chuck hunt. Some of the landscape looks very familiar or similar to areas I've hunted over that way. Good shooting. WD

As to time of day I prefer evening's and or morning's. When in a good area I will kill them all day long even when the temp's get up in the 90's. I used to kill 300-400 a year but just don't put in the time these days

Good shooting! I can only dream about those good old days of yesteryear of great ghog hunting. Around here these days, if you see one it is a good day, two is a great day, and three is a bonanza.

ohlongarmisle, you've been quite the busy boy! You are for sure in 'hog heaven'!

Our rock chucks season is just getting underway now that the sun has finally replaced blowing rain and snow, so I hope to get out again after our chucks. Tis the season!

I normally see wood chucks he late afternoon/early evening. Between 5-8 PM is prime time.

I normally set a rifle up, go about chores, if I see any moving I will poke at them.
