Resize .38 s&w ammo in .38 special or 357 die?

I have one
box to use up and they fit tight in the chambers. A 357 die might be long enough to do this.

In what pistol do you want to shoot the 38 S&W?

Sometimes people mistakenly buy 38 S&W to shoot in a 38 Spl or 357 Mag. It will not work, as the diameter of 38 S&W Bullets is larger than 38 Spl and 357 Mag.

In my opinion, it would be bad practice to try to size loaded 38 S&W ammo with a 38 Spl or 357 Mag die.

It almost chambers in a S&W m19.
What little difference in size shouldn't make much of a pressure difference, but I don't know either.

I ran one rd through the die. It left a bulge the thickness of the shell holder. It will chamber with a little push. The factory loads actually go in better. Might have to pick and choose chambers.

If you think MAKING AMMO FIT IS STUPID , UNSAFE and AGAINST ALL RELOADING SAFETY RULES , hit the like button or respond directly.
Even if its a low pressure round ( 18,000-22,000 psi ) it can take a few fingers off or worse . Get the CORRECT AMMO

Those shells aren't exactly worth a fortune, but they are hard to find right now, and ought to be worth shipping cost plus some to someone who has one of those old pistolas..

I'd make you an offer, but I've got plenty of them, brass, bullets, and even factory shells. jd

Stop with worrying about getting it to chamber!

As Txtaxman says and Gmac emphasizes, this is a very bad idea.

The SW 38 bullet is .361; the 38 special is .357 => the SW 38 is 4 thousandths larger => you're going to get some really high pressure when the gases try to push that bullet through a 38 Special/357 barrel.

Bullet diameter is the least of the worries. Sounds like he is running live ammo through the sizing die. If that’s the case, the bullets were swaged down at the same time.

Now the problems are the super crimp. Reduced case capacity, and compromised case head at the 200 line.

Hope I’m wrong, but when someone says they ran “rounds” through the sizing die, it kinda sets off a wArning buzzer.

38 S&W bullet and case are slightly larger in diameter than the 38 Special and 357 Mag. As mentioned sell it and buy the proper ammo for your handgun.

as usual
FIX THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SYMPTOM.
PROBLEM wrong phrking ammo for the gun
symptom..it will not fit...
so we try making it fit WRONG
