residue on case neck

I asked the OPs question before also, & had gotten this same response about to light of a charge. I wish it were the case but I'm not thinking so. I had the same residue on all my cases throughout an entire charge range with faster and slower powders. All the way up to charges that produced stiff bolt lift and heavy extractor and ejector marks on cases. I know this is of little help OP; but having gone through the same issues, I know what is NOT the cause. I'll be watching this thread though to learn more myself hopefully.

What were your chamber end clearances?
Excess trimming from chamber end lets gas scoot in around necks, preventing faster sealing otherwise.

If you use 0000 steel wool, do it away from your reloading stuff. It breaks up and leaves tiny steel wires everywhere. When I do it, I use a cordless drill, outside, and spin the cases with the drill while holding the steel wool on the neck / shoulder area. Does a great job, but it's a PITA. I would rather use Ballistol.

I use Forster case sizing lubricant on my finger twist the case and then tumble them. I don't like to size dirty brass.
When you clean the carbon off with steel wool or any other abrasive your decreasing the thickness of the brass.
