Required Scope Magnification

Cat977, bheadboy & Seawasp - you guys certainly dredged up a two year old thread! ;D

Glad it was of some help to you. Much disagreement about scopes & scope power & bullets and such, but most of these guys are pretty darned good riflemen and hunters I'd guess. For more discussions on long-range hunting, spend a little time at:

It was actually the best thread I've read in awhile. Civil, informative, respectful, and packed with opinions/options. Sorry to have gone so far back, but I'm trying to ketchup. Thanks for the links, I'm headed there right now. This is a very awesome forum !!!

A budget minded, but very good scope is the "Super Sniper" avail at SWFA:

http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-Rifle-Scopes-C187.aspx

The 10x fixed power scope is still avail for $299, and is a pretty darned good scope. Although I don't own one, I've shot using them, and know some highly regarded target competitors who use them, or have used them happily. One competitor I know was keeping his as a backup scope in case his much more expensive target scope failed. They also have variables, but I have not used their variable power scopes. In this case the fixed 10x is the bargain, and very good for either target shooting, or for SOME hunting scenarios.

On the other hand, there's a reason the various 2-7x, 3-9x & 3.5-10x scopes are so popular for hunting - they work great!

Regards, Guy

I prefer the 3-9x range myself. Shots where I hunt can range from 50-500 yards. In more open country I might opt for a 2-10 or 3-12. If you are at a good distance off there shouldnt be a rush to take the shot. If the animal is spooked or moving you shouldnt take the shot. Precise bullet placement on game animals at long range requires a steady rest and unspooked, moving game. If you are on a trophy hunt that cost you a lot of money, bring a good set of binoculars and a spoting scope to make sure you want to harvest the animal before you take the shot. Patience is a big part of hunting. If you shoot an animal that you hunted fairly, and you find the rack not as much to your liking as you had hoped, dont throw a hissy fit. Any game animal fairly persued and taken honorably is a good kill. Loosing ones cool over broken tines and misjudged rack size is just poor sportsmanship.

The difference between the average 9x and a 18x or 24 x is about 3-4 OUNCES. Are you gonna limit yourself to better vision for lightweight's sake and then pull out a three POUND spotting scope you've been carrying ? You lost me on that one. My lightweight rifle (23" fluted in synthetic featherweight stock) wears a 6x24 and while it may not fit your "look" as a matchup on a small rifle, I can see quite well at any sane range to pinpoint a shot or judge the merit of a rack. Like all of us, your eyes will not get better, they'll get older, so then you'll be shopping again down the road. Buy twice ? Why? Trying to use logic here...did I miss something?

All "Great" information on scopes.

Myself, I'll be shooting "Ranges" for quite some time before trying my luck at game. As I've mentioned, the ranges in these parts only cover up to 600yds.

But that doesn't mean I want to limit myself w/optics.
My objective is a decent grouping @ 1000yds. If this is attainable via 300 - 600yd ranges "first", then I'm in good shape !

I'm very very new to LRS, and have no relatives or friends that dabble in this art. I was to busy, and to dumb, to pick my Dads brain for information when he was alive. He was a very good shooter, but didn't force feed us. He was a "By-Example" type.

Thanks for the help along the way here, and I'm open to any opinions/recommendations for a scope that may fit my needs, and possible "future" expectations. I'm not rich, so I doubt I'll be purchasing many scopes.

Thanks Everyone !!!!

WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! Thats all I can say,pos deer? should have been left for the bears and lions?wasn't the perfect rack I had invisioned on my wall? couldn't judge how biggggg the antlers were with a 3-9? What kid of B.S is that? I use a monster 5-25 pmll s&b on my .338-378 wby mag but I can tell you if a deer has a big rack with a 2x scope and if I was worried if the( POS )had tines broken off his rack I would use my 60x swarovski, however I don't care if his horns are not perfect!!!
And I can easly, let me reitterate---EASLY kill a deer @ 600 yds with a 6x scope as a matter of a fact I am sure I could do it on 3x. Everybody that knows anything knows that antlers grow with glass xxxx If he is 5 or 600yds out and I can see horns with my naked eye he's big. Now this post is old and the auther has probably has bought several scopes, but to answer his question QUALIY glass is inportant not quantity. I personally prefer bigger scopes but if weight is a issue buy what will work for you. I own several 2.5 -10s that are real nice little scopes and several 4.5-14 leupy's that are also nice and plenty capable of taking animals out to 600 or even ferther.
Wayne.
