Repurposing Dad’s old XP100

Dad passed in 2018. He had this primarily for silhouette shooting (see photos). Started life as a 7BR. At some point he had Col Frank Conway convert it to 7 IHMSA. The next planned iteration is to fit the Herett’s walnut stock, and new Shilen barrel shown. The Shilen is already chambered in 7 IHMSA. My intention is to convert that barrel to 7 x 47 Lapua, using 6.5 x 47 Lapua brass on hand. Trying to find reamers, dies, and best procedures. Found a lot of semi-ancient threads that seemingly fizzled out before any concrete avenues developed, which brought me here. I possess any and all required skills, experience, and equipment to accomplish the build, just seeking guidance on the best approach. Mainly for the reloading dies, and sourcing a chamber reamer optimized for the dies.

I have a XP 100R that Jon Beanland built chambered in a 6.47 L. Love it and it's really accurate. Have shot many PD's 450-550yds with it and several Axis deer. Enjoy

Thank y’all for the links.

I’ll give it a a while here. There’s a grand total of two people viewing the other forum. Undoubtedly someone over there has the answers. Hoping they also frequent Accurate Shooter.

Fingers crossed.

If I were starting a project of this nature my mentor would be @SEB-USA .
He is a diehard bolt action pistol shooter, a great guy and lives in Wyoming.

Sounds like all you need is a chamber reamer, Manson JGS PTG ect can provide that. You need to decide what weight bullets you want to shoot and wether or not you plan to turn necks and discuss it with your reamer maker. You should be able to use a 6.5x47L bushing die and a sleeve style micrometer seater ( that you can modify with the chamber reamer) to load your ammo. I would pillar bed the barreled action In the new stock. If you are planning to rechamber the IHMSA bbl I’m not sure the 7x47 reamer will clean it up so you will need to take a look at the cartridge prints and compare them

Typically a bushing die would need to be opened up for a larger caliber than it was designed for.

Try Clymer for a reamer as they will rent them along with a head space gauges needed.

As for dies, try ihmsa.org as someone there might have set for sale. Maybe. Also huntingtons.com

Here's a 6.5x47LAPUA reamer print which provides the primary body dimensions for comparison with the 7mm IHMSA - I don't have that print. Per paperpuncher's post, above, if the LAPUA would clean-up the IHMSA chamber, you just need to determine what neck diameter you want (no-turn, or, turn), and how much free-bore you want/need.

Also, the reamer maker should know how much, if any, to shorten the neck to accommodate shortening due to necking-up the brass. Since so directed by [the late] Stan Ware, I always order 'short' free-bore, and, using a dummy round, use a 'throating' reamer to match the desired length. I have not been disappointed.

When LAPUA SAAMI spec'd 6.5x47, I had Hugh make a set which included, 6mm; .257; .308 versions, and later, a 6.5: Redding Type "S" FL/bushing dies size the bodies perfectly. If necessary, opening the neck-port to accommodate a larger caliber requires only a chucking reamer (I use carbide), or, appropriate
sized carbide boring-bar. RG

I've got a rear grip that I'm completely having gone through . A lot of riflesmiths can help you with this project .

Nice looking stock!
Speaking of riflesmiths… years ago my wife suggested I get a hobby… so I started dabbling in the stock market;

Yes they’re all projects. Trying my best to finish them before heading back to Wyoming.

Thank you RG!
I have samples of both pieces of brass, and can already tell I’ll need to move the barrel shoulder up around .100” of an inch (and trim the tenon length accordingly) before running a reamer tailored for the desired chamber (7mm x 47 Lapua). Armed with your print, side by side with a print of the target chamber I could prep the barrel while waiting for a reamer, and be a good ways further down this path.

What is the jig on the magnetic base?

Hal
Hal the previous post shows the jig in use on a Remington 700 .300 Win Mag build.

Also, if you like airguns, here's a link to a QB79 that jig came in handy on.
It's been used on many a build, from .50 BMG down to putting an octagon Lilja barrel on a home cloned billet Henry AR7. The spindle mounted receiver chuck is also home made.
