Replacing Rem 700 saftey

I would like to know if anyone knows a easy way to replace the "C" clip that holds the pivot pin on the Rem 700 safety.
Is there a special tool needed? I need more hands than I have!! Trying not to shoot it across the room!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ron

No you do not need special tools to remove an "E" clip. Just use a wide blade flathead screw driver to push it off while keeping your finger on the clip to make sure it doesn't go flying away. If you do lose it, most hardware stores carry E clips. Putting them back on is easy too. Just make sure that when you remove the safety you have a small container under it so you don't lose the ball bearing. Don't worry, it just drops out and you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.

A standard E clip is smaller, outside diameter, than the "Mutant E Clip" used on the trigger group's safety lever pivot pin.
Depending on vintage, there are 1 or 2 dimples to "Locate" the Mutant E Clip to the lever spring to prevent rotation.

Yes it is the mutant elongated clip that has to go over the two dimples and under the grove in the pivot pin. The problem I have is pushing down on the ball bearing retainer and getting the clip over the dimples and under the pivot groove, that is the challenge I'm having, If I use a standard e-clip would it be OK if it rotates? Thank You all for the tips, Ron

It is a shilen trigger and it is on a left handed action. On closer examination of the trigger, the holes where the ball bearing sits; on the side if it was right handed The holes have a bevel. On the other side to make it a left hand configuration the holes don't have the bevel making the bearing sit a little higher putting more spring pressure against the clip. I changed the safety from another trigger and it was enough to get the clip installed!! But from now on I will certainly go with a Timney as it comes with the safety installed, because while I got it to work, it is very stiff since the holes are not beveled to allow the ball to move smooth from hole to hole. I would take it apart and bevel them but I sure it is hardened and be a pain in the butt to drill so I will live with it. So if any one thinks about a shilen on a left handed action you will have to modify it to work right, just a heads up, Ron

Countersink the appropriate holes to match(outside diameter)for ease of safety lever actuation or you will break the lever.
Ensure the spring w/ 2 dimples is not getting hung up in the pins Mutant E clip's groove.
Once installed, a visual inspection of the channel shaped spring to be sure it is parallel w/ safety lever in both the safe & fire position.

Ron,
Better to address your problem rather than buy an inferior trigger.

Good point. How are the timney trigger as apposed to the Shilen?
Not nearly as good, IMO. I've never had any problems setting a Shilen Std. trigger up in the LH mode. Sounds to me like some triggers got out without all the chamfering for the detent ball on the LH side. I've never had to modify or alter a Shilen Std. trigger to be able to use a LH safety. They've all come ready to install the safety, RH or LH. Maybe they've changed? It's been awhile since I've ordered. I've still got a couple from the last batch I ordered (from Shilen).

Not sure why folks fuss with either one of those triggers when they all know good and well that Jewell is better. And from what I hear, Bix & Andy is even better yet. If it's that importanat to you, spend the extra money and get a trigger that you know will give top notch performance
