Replacement for VARGET in 6mmBR loads

correct me if i am wrong...N140 is single based (no nitroglycerin) and therefore less harmful to barrels, while N540 is double based containing nitroglycerin. berger's book has a great burn rate chart seeming to have the best rates i've seen...some have BL-C(2) burn rate very close to varget. i love vihtavouri powders but for two things...cost and they seem to be temp sensitive, while varget is not.

You're correct about N140 being single base vs double base for 540.

I wouldn't trust a burn rate chart as far as I could throw one two handed against a stout wind. There is a lot, lot more to the real world deal. Density being the first thing that comes to mind.

N140

Thanks. Acknowledge receipt of message Re burn rates. Also noted somewhere else was that Vhita was the cleanest burning. A chart is better than just dropping the handle, I hope. Anyways, Vhita's page has load data for the N140. Yeah, I have 1/3 lb Varget left and I don't see any on the horizon.

Don't forget the forgotten powder - IMR 4320. It is still a player if you give it a chance. Check out the Hodgdon powder burn rate chart.

I am running out of VARGET, probably enough for 2 60 shot matches + sighters. Can anyone advise me of a replacement powder? My rifles shoot
30 gr VARGET and 29.3 VARGET with 105 Berger VLDs, WOLF primers,
LAPUA brass. Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.

As has been suggested by some, RE15 is a good replacement for Varget. What I've found and been told by those in the know, that IMR 4895 is next in the pecking ordfer for powder replacement when Varget & RE15 are extinct. And that is one powder that seems to be plentiful where Varget & RE15 are gone. In fact before RE15 even was even on the market, my partner loaded our ammo using IMR4895 with excellent result. Just gotta test again to find the sweet amount. Just something to consider.
