Replacement bolt

Tuesday I finally received my customized 7mm Rem Mag........I cycled the bolt a few times at the FFL, put it back in the shrink wrap, took it home, took it back out, started to put it back in the rifle, and the bolt (PT&G) handle came off in my hand. It is broken at the solder, looks to me like it's been worked on before....here is a pic:

Anyway, I first called PT&G but they said they wouldn't do anything since I am not the original purchaser. I have been trying to reach the business I bought it from but they are not answering their phone or emails......I talked to a local gunsmith who could solder it back on......but now I'm wondering if I will always worry about it coming off again......I was looking at maybe getting a replacement bolt and having the gunsmith fit it......mine is built on a trued Rem 700 long action.

If I go the replacement bolt route, I was looking at this:

What else would I need to buy? Please excuse the newbie question ???

Thanks

Contact forum member Dans40X about TIG welding the bolt handle to the bolt body. Many positive comments on the forum ref. the quality of his work.

If it is silver solder on by someone how has a clue how to, you'll not have a problem with the handle falling off unless you hurry it along with a hammer when you have a case stuck in it from a overload..

Ive seen em survive for many years without coming off. One more tip- remove the bolt when the gun is in the case. I keep mines in a pocket pistol sat nite special soft case in with the gun

If you action and bolt is good, then don't replace it. No need to monkey with the headspace.

Something ain't right. That shouldn't fail.

The reason those get worked on is to adjust the timing. look at the extraction ramp and see if there is any indication that the timing has been wrong in the past.

Since you have it off you can replace it with an aftermarket handle if you want. Hollands makes a nice one out of 4140. Have it installed by a gunsmith to get the timing right.

You could also take this opportunity to have the firing pin bushed down to .060 which is one of my favorite upgrades.

UPDATE. I guess we don't need to find a reason why this was taken apart (I was guessing a Timing issue). PTG sells it as a 2 piece bolt and the buyer has to braze it.

D.Kiff/PT&G did not/does not silver braze the handles onto the polished bolt body that is in picture from OP.
The handle pictured is of current OEM Rem production & #SG S/S type.

The pictured silver braze attempt is a pre-school/elementary attempt at best-
Both parts where not of same temperature to flow silver braze.
Too much heat on handle causing burnt flux-game over!

There is a reason any aircraft/submarine part that requires silver brazing,
the individual has to be certified to accomplish the simple task!

10's of thousands of satisfied customers!
Been TIMING bolt handles long before there were You Tube Video's!

Dan,
I fully agree with your assessment except I don't know for sure that I agree that PTG didn't do the job. the reason given was "not original owner". If reason given was "we didn't do that solder job" then I would agree.

It would be nice to know if the bolt was worked on. As I suggested, timing issues is the most likely cause.

If we can confirm that I should believe PTG didn't do that soldering job, then I should edit my post above.

+1 for Dan. He tig welded my bolt handle on my Lawton 7000 and told me the bolt handle from Lawton was out of spec. He fixed the problem and returned immediately.

I know for a FACT that PT&G DOES NOT & NEVER HAS OR WILL silver braze handles onto their 2 piece bolts.

An individual in OR that manufactures extended mag boxes(fill in the blank) has attempted to silver braze them on.

carlsbad-
Timing was not the reason that the bolt handle fell off in shipment to the OP.
The reason was the preschool/elementary attempt by some "plumber" attempting to silver braze 2 pieces together thinking the process is similar to soft soldering-which it is NOT.
Another elementary mistake was shipper attempting to ship the rifle w/ bolt in the action & not removed from the action & individually wrapped & included w/ rifle.
(common sense has gone by the way side since Google & so called Smart devices dominate our society)

Timing would be the reason an amateur would try to take it off and move it. I can't tell on my screen that it is silver solder vs a bad braze job. --jerry

Preschool/elementary attempt at cad free silver brazing.
The difference between soldering & brazing are the temperatures required to accomplish the task.
Most attempts would be better served w/ a good epoxy job.
(Do Not inquire to me if you attempt epoxying a handle back on)

And some, who do not trust their work SCREW the pooch even more by adding adornments(screws)

Same holds true to trueing/blue printing, 'tis the reason that I've coined the phrase "Molesting"

PT&G does not attach handles. They have no way of doing it without the receiver to assure the bolt timing and extraction. Dans40X has done many for me. Cheap insurance and perfect timing.

OK. I'm convinced PTG didn't attach the handle and have takeen my comment off above. --Jerry

Send it to Dan and you will not be disappointed, he just did one for me and I can't say enough good about the work or his effort in getting it done. Thanks again Dan, she's ready too shoot tomorrow.
