Removing rimfire 40X barrel

Is there a trick to removing a rimfire 40x barrel? I would like to keep the factory barrel and place the whole thing in a Eliseo chassis for small bore prone matches.

I have a Remington rear action wrench but I would be afraid of twisting the action.

Just removed mine and it was a pain in the arse. It would not come off with a rear entry wrench. I used the wrench that wraps around the action and recoil lug and it came straight off.

I have a 40x rimfire in an Eliseo chassis and I ended up sending my barreled action to Gary and had him grind down the factory recoil lug to fit in the chassis. Works great, and I don't think you need the whole disc for rimfires.

My father made the action wrench. Using a large adjustable in this configuration I still cant remove the barrel.

Is the barrel slipping in those v-blocks? You put a parting cut right in front of the recoil lug and you can unscrew it by hand

Yes, I tried the blocks plain then added some of the non slip stuff you put in drawers and under rugs to see if that helped, it did not.

Try some drywall tape or rosin

Sacrifice the recoil lug or cut just in front of it and like Dusty said it'll unscrew by hand . If you want to reuse the barrel you can by using a larger recoil lug .

And your vise is too far from the receiver .

If the 22 is the same as the center fire, you only need
a "GREAT SCOTT" barrel vise and a rear entry wrench.
No cuts/heat /shims/leather/rosin. It will separate unblemished.

Where exactly on the recoil lug would I cut?

Grind down as much as possible on your bench grinder, then turn the rest down as far as possible in the lathe, then use a parting tool to cut all the way through.

They are saying make a parting cut at the recoil lug. I only had to do this once, I cut the lug down with an angle grinder then put it in the lathe and parted the recoil lug off and the barrel unscrewed easy.

I think its time to cut the recoil lug. I soaked it in Kroil the past couple of days, wrapped the barrel with drywall tape and used a rear action wrench. It did not budge.

When I RemAge'd my R700, I just cut the lug with a hacksaw (carefully!) until I just started showing the ID. Once in, carefully widen the notch and the tap the lug out with a punch.

The barrel and receiver were unblemished, and it unscrewed by hand.
