removing pillars and estuions(sp) from a laminated wood stock.

i am trying to rehabilitate a long range laminated wood stock. i think the previous action was a savage 3 screw and the forward 2 pillars are not needed/on the way. i am assuming they are glued or bedded in place. they are steel/ss and my poor attempts drill them out did not work.
metal seemed hard( i am use to alum pillars)
suggestions ???
thanks

I have cut several stainless and mild steel pillars out with an end mill. Lacking access to a mill Dusty's idea would probably work if you drive them from the bottom of the stock there would be less chance of damaging the exterior of the stock. Were you drilling with a sharp drill in a drill press or using a hand drill?

the good news is they are out. one had a 1" dia head and then a 3/4 body, the other was a 5/8's dia. both had glue grooves in the body which allowed then to com apart as drill size increased. now to clan up the holes and glue or bed in replacement wood. anyone have a source of 1" dia laminated wood dowels/or square rods.
the stock is an early LRB with a rudder but no al front slides/guides. there maybe a fourth action screw hole.
lots of bedding material covering stuff up.
think this will be set up with a kelbly atlas rp/rb action. not my computer, so not sure about pics.

If you want laminated wood look for ink pen turning squares

so the pen blanks showed up yesterday. laminated wood. i have turned the frst simple straight .7 dia filler and nearly completed the mushroom shaped filler...well on my way to filling these holes. thanks to all.
So did they match good enough? Alot of times they have thinner plies but color usually matches. Glad you found something
