Remington wood finish?

I have an older Remington 700 Varmint Special and it has a bad spot on the cheek piece about the size of a thumb print. Is there any way to duplicate the finish that Remington used? I hate trying to remove all the old finish that they used. BTDT before and it took forever removing the old finish and I'd like to keep this one as close to original as possible. Maybe I should just leave it alone???

Does it have a gloss finish / varnish ? That’s hard to fix, but…
I use Minwax Tung oil to repair semi gloss and matt finishes. It works well for blending and can be reapplied as many times as necessary to get the color and gloss correct.
It seems to be a blend of other stuff besides Tung oil and dries better.

Leaving it alone might be the best thing, because fiddling around with it could make for an outcome that you didn't want. However, you might search some Youtube guitar finish repair videos and go from there.

The spot isn't horrible but its there and probably bugs me more than it would the next guy (or gal). Leaving it alone is probably the best idea unless I wanted to redo the complete stock, which I really don't. I think I'll leave it alone.

Pyscodog... Did you ever find a exacting fix for the finish on your Remington stock. I'm in the same boat.

I don't know what Remington used back in the day but I can tell you its a royal PITA removing it.

If it is the high gloss finish that Remington used, it was a 2-part urethane finish developed for them by DuPont. I don't think there is any easy way to repair it. I believe DuPont still makes it under the name Chromaclear. You might be able to fill the spot with a clear finish like MinWax Clear Brushing Lacquer.

I'm afraid trying to repair that one small spot that I'll make a bigger mess and be better off if I just leave it alone.
