Remington VLS 243

to all of the shooters who go to this sight I really need your help. Around a year ago I bought a remington vls in 243 for hog matches and deer hunting. I have tried everything in the way of bullets, powder, primers and all kinds of seating depth and no groups smaller than a baseball at one hundred yards. I talked to a bench shooter who also has one and he told me it was the pits. Without spending a bunch more money at a gunsmith could anyone come up with things to try? The barrel is free floating to the action the screws are torqued to 40in pounds in frount and 35in pounds at the back. The crown seems great no marks anywhere that can be seen I also took a cotton swab around the crown then looked at it with a magnifier and it was clean. I would like to just use it now for deer hunting, and yes a baseball size group would be ok but this gun should do better than that. If anyone could help let me say thanks in advance for your kindness. I am shooting 95gr nosler bilistic tips now with 34gr of IMR-4895 this load shot the baseball size group I just feel it should shoot better than this at 100yds. this group is five shots. thanks again.

Thanks for the reply to my question, yes all screws were all set to torque 15inlb and the scope is a 36power weaver that was used on a 6mmBR for benchrest shooting. I think Remington must be going the way of other comp.just get the money and run forget about the quality.

Have you cleaned all the Copper out of the Barrel??
Excessive copper and/or carbon fouling will destroy groups.
For a simple Test,,run some patches thru the barrel soaked in "Sweets",
let it sit 5 minutes, then push a clean patch, if patch turns Blue you have copper fouling.

I bought the same rifle. Gun shop that sold it to me said that it had less than a box of ammo through it. It wouldn't shoot as good as yours. The first thing I did was clean all the copper out of it and that took a good while. Then I glassed the stock. The inletting on mine was done with a chainsaw I think. Then I worked up a load with 87 VMAX bullets using R19 and CCI mag primers. It would keep them under an inch with that. I finely sold it because I thought it should have been better.

the .243VLS 700 26" is very temperamental i know went threw the same with mine although it shot Much better then your baseball cards
it also never tasted factory ammo.. never...
1st up make sure the recoil lug rests against the Back of the of the wood.. the front dosen't need to touch
[i hope you didn't squash the wood @ 40 & 35 inch pounds.. not knowing how accurate your torque wrench is]
2nd you have a 9.25 twist barrel it should shoot anything... but i'l tell you it doesn't like 95gr anything.
100gr seirras are a "hole" lot better... go right to 105gr hornady or a 105 VLD bullet... us RL-15 an fed 210 primer...
set the bullet one caliber [+] into the case [.263 depth] [it may not fit in the magazine box though]....
make sure your neck tension is uniform 'no crimping'

if you have trouble getting down to 3/4" with this load... sell the gun

Hello,

Thanks again for the help and ideas on what to do with this gun. I will try some 105 and see if this makes any differance as I said this will be used for deer hunting only. It will also be my last REMINGTON of any type gun

don't go by that One gun i have 7- 700's they all shoot v.well as many others have an do well

i some cases a 243 can be pain to get going an then some shoot rite out of the box...

if the gun hasn't been altered an doesn't shoot at least 1" you should have an maybe still you can call Remington an tell them your sending the rifle back to them because of the problem your having an would expect it to be corrected... you'd be surprised they really don't need Bad advertizing rite now

i don't know your reloading capabilities an how much you time you spent prep'n your cases an such, but it really should shoot at least one inch at 100yrds "

good luck...an let us know how/what you do
