rem 700 vls

Hey-new to this site and got a question--
I have a .243 in the rem 700 vls and it has some pressure ponts between the barrell and stock.I am thinking of bedding and was wondering if its best to float with these heavy barrels or not--have heard it both ways ???.appreciate the help-Joe

Try it the way it is and if it doesnt shoot free float and bed it.You can always add a pressure point to any stock with bedding compound. Most remmys like free floating.Your laminate stock should be stiff enough for a float job.If the fore end flexs after you do the job then route out a channel staight dowm the fore end and add a steel rod and bury it in epoxy.Set your front bag close to the recoil lug when shooting ,shoot a couple 3 shot groups and slide the bag out a short way and shoot another group and keep track of this to see if the pressure on the forend changes the point of impact.

My first rifle was a 700 vls in .243. I got a standard glass bedding job done and she shoots just fine, at least 1 if not 1/2 MOA, and I've even had a few groups nearly 1/4.
Mine isn't fully floated, the chamber is bedded and since it's an old rifle I'm considering sending it off to be squared and rebarreled, but before that happens I may grind out the chamber bedding and test it just to see. Until then I can't speak as to whether it prefers a full float or partial float.
Also make sure the forearm is well inletted because it will flex some, not much, 1/16" or less under a firm grip, but some.

Hey thanx for the replies! Stock had a bit of a gouge so have it about sanded out. Does anyone know of a good video on glass bedding? This will be my first go-have read a lot but a vid would be nice. Will bed and then refinish stock.I think while its all broke down a jewell would be a nice addition-been wanting to try one for years!Joe

I know AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute) makes a video about "super tuning the factory rifle" or something like that and the smith's name I think is Darrel Holland. In the video he covers all sorts of things you can do to a factory rifle from fixing the crown, changing triggers, and glass bedding (not pillar bedding, I think there's a separate video for that) to stuff that I wish I could do like squaring the receiver, lapping bolt lugs, and reheadspacing.

I've got a vls but its 22-250 I shot right out of the box it was1.5moa with its best loads since then I glass bedded it floated the barrel and lightened the trigger now I'm getting .3moa a definite improvement. You may want to check out how to shoot beyond belief by best of the west they show you how to bed the sam rifle that you have they also show some other tricks. There's three dvds in the set ones a good way to practice ones the science behind wind drift and b.c. stuff and the last is improving a factory rifle (a 700 vls .243) it pretty good stuff

To tell you the truth I have never seen a free floated barrel shoot worse than one with pressure on it. Almost always improves but never worsens. JMO
