Remington Titanium Actions vs Custom Titanium Actions

I am wondering if anybody here has first hand experience with both the original Rem 700 titanium actions (Gen 1) made in the 90's when Remington first offered them for sale and first hand experience with custom Ti actions of the top action builders.

Why I'm asking is I plan on putting together a 270 and plan on making it as light as possible but with a 24-26" #2 bbl. I already have a Rem 700 Ti actioned rifle that I bought new when they first came out and was thinking of building on that action VS buying a new custom Ti action from one of the top action builders.

Looking for your thoughts on which way to turn and why????????????

For a good hunting rifle I would use the Remington and spend the saved money on the rest of the hardware. I have a Pierce Ti and had a Remington Ti. I wish I had chambered my Pierce with a less recoiling cartridge as the 280AI puts a sharp hit on your shoulder on the bench. It is like my 300 Weatherby on the bench. I'm no longer a light rifle for hunting person. I am now in the class of hunters that say you need to get rid of your belly weight instead of rifle weight.

My Ti rifle is a M700 clone built for me by Prairie Gunworks in Winnipeg Canada. Ross Spagrud, the owner has the Canadian military sniper rifle contract, and offers his Ti rifles for hunters. I had it chambered in 7-08 Ackley for high country hunting in a caliber that does not beat me to death on purpose. I chose that route in lieu of the factory Remington due to the custom action being a few ounces lighter. With a 24" fluted barrel, it still has very good handling characteristics.

A custom Ti rifle can have features a factory action will not have such as dual ejectors in the boltface, Sako or M16 extractor and a titanium bolt also. But Butch above is right, most of us could sure use less belly fat.

You'd have to figure out the weight of the Remington and compare weights. In today's market? You could probably make a small fortune on an original Remington Ti. Probably at least enough to build a real nice custom. The Remington market is insane right now.

Also don't overlook some of the steel actions. The Defiance AnTi and Kelblys Nanook come to mind.

I've never messed with a titanium action but I've heard they can be "sticky"

Can be, but not all.

I agree on the loose the extra pounds and don't worry about building a lightweight rifle. I've actually done that, lost 50lbs 2 yrs ago but have gained 10 back, so now working on 20lbs, but actually I'm interested in the light weight because of other issues, turning 68 this year, had back surgery last year, and still put the miles on out hunting (public land in AZ, no sitting in blinds or stands), but staying alot closer to the truck unless someone is with me now and trying to lighten the load. I'm finding that not only is it harder to pack out but I need to lighten the load so I don't F-up the back surgery.

Ok, but I've had 5 neck and back surgeries and would rather carry either an 9lb rifle or a LW in a low recoiling round.

And more over, it woud not hurt as bad having more meat on your shoulders, as my Win. 88 in .284 would leave some discoloration on mine...from the bench !

Right on. I have two rifles with scope and sling push 10 lbs and I’m glad they do recoil wise. One is a 338 WM the other a 308 Norma mag. I hunted moose a long hard week two years ago, lots of walking. That’s why both have swivels and slings!
