I just acquired a Remington scope 24XBR Model and was told it was from the 70's. I cant seem to find out to much info. on it other than they only made 1000 of these if I am correct. Any input on this and a value as well would be greatly appreciated.

Understand there was an article by Jeff Aberegg on these scopes in the November 1994 Precision Shooting magazine. Will check if I still have that issue.

Those were made in Mike Walker's custom shop in Ilion. I knew the designers and Mike because my office was right next door. The 22 bench rest bullets were made in the same room as the scopes. It cost a lot to make because the shop rate in the custom shop was high because of all the engineer's and management. No idea what they're worth now. Dennis

farmer44, I found the article. It is in Special Edition No. 2,November 1994, Volume 2, pages 39-45. If you do not have access to this issue, PM me your address and I will mail you a copy.

Very helpful thanks very much for the info. if anyone should happen to get a value please pass it on

I seem to remember that a fella had one for sale right on this forum.I think he was asking about 1000.00 or so.

I have a real nice 24X. Not alot of info on these floating around but some. Would like to read the PS article myself. My understanding is there was roughly 1100 made. The first 700ish were 20X's and then the 24X was added the last yr or so. So overall not alot of 24X's made. Mine looks near new and came from the estate of "a well known BR shooter" but the seller wouldn't tell me who.lol Mine has a dot reticle which might make it a bit rarer as most I see are standard crosshairs? It also came with a recoil spring which I have yet to discover if that were an option or add on after the fact. About all I have seen and what I read they were not sold with such???? Also found a set of original new 40X mounts that were made for Remington by Lyman.

Kind of a neat piece of shooting history. Price used to be $5-600ish but the last few yrs it seems they have become a bit more popular or higher in demand and price has increased but no written in stone prices it seems. Butch Lambert picked up a 20X and a couple 24X's a while back and I think he had one listed for sale just the last few weeks??? Also a 20X currently on GB with a starting price of $1500 which I find somewhat optimistic. They had a 20 or 24X awhile back with original shipping tube and all paper work and IIRC that had a $1500 starting price but don't remember if it sold or not?

About all I know about them. Need to get mine mounted this summer and shoot it a bit instead of covet it.lol

Respectfully,
Dennis

Stroebels blue book on scopes and sights , lists the price of the scope at $700-1000 . Came with screw on lens caps and externally adjustable mounts , bases for Rem actions . Optional sunshade was available . It's short length permits mounting it directly on the receiver . Recoil spring recommended for heavy recoil calibers .

A lot of replies and I do appreciate all the feed back. If I were in my younger years I would just keep it and perhaps I may.

in mid 1967, i was with DuPont in Rochester, an active BR shooter and knew Mike Walker, Jim Stekl well, as i had been in sales for DuPont and marketing Mgr of one division, Mike and i visited in Ilion considering my transfer from DuPont to Remington and being the marketing director for sales of the scope, and 40x's.

the lenses were made in Japan, the tubes were formed on equipment in the custom shop which Mike had acquired and the assembly there. after requesting a transfer from DuPont to Rem, and being denighed, ( i would have lost 10 yrs of service benefits) i determines to not make the move.
I had one of the first 24x's on a 6x47xbr which Mike broght to me in Fassett a few weeks later, the action had been free floated and the bbl bedded.

after some years with 3 children in college i sold the rifle, am i ever sorry today.

I used to play behind dupont if it is the one between lexington and driving park avenue.Rochester ny that is.

bheadboy interesting story, I believe we all have regretted selling a gun at some point in our lives. I know I have. I have a 40x 222 that would make the perfect mate for this scope do you agree?

Farmer,
i would put the two together in a heartbeat, they are history, both designed by Mike and balance preformance very well.

interesting -in the 60-early 70's the prefered powder for the 222/222m was IMR 4198 (THE ONE IN THE YELLOW CAN) after the fire at the plant and it being rebuilt, IMR 4198 was put in a red can.
The two were not the same and the latter would never shoot with the Yellow can product. that is when other powders began to be used. I remember Wally Hart, telling me his ailing father Bob Hart (hart rifle bbls) was so frustrated looking for a better powder, i had an extra 8 lb can of yellow and sent it to him - he had been so helpful to me in my learning br and getting started.

changing powders is a major historical problem, old manuals are worth nothing as far as loads for todays powders and bullets with different bearing surfaces, different production suppliers, find me one powder that is made in the same plant as 5 years ago with no changes in equipment.

Jon, yes that is the plant where i was for about 2 years 1967-68.

I bought 3 scopes from Jim Stekl, one 20X and two 24X. One of them has Unertl rings and the other 2 have Remington rings. They used Unertl rings on the early models and the rest had Remington rings.

farmer44, There are pictures of the two rings in the article I sent you. Easy to distinguish the different rings. Also the Unertl mounts have Unertl stamped on the rear of the mounts. There are no markings on the Remington mounts. Just as Butch said, the article indicates that the earlier scopes had Unertl rings and then Mike Walker designed their own rings when Unertl could not supply the quantity that Remington needed.

The scope advertised on Gunbroker has Remington rings. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=335881756
