Remington or Winchester brass?

First off, I apologize if this is a repeat question. Did a search and found nothing.

Looking to buy 500 .22-250 cases and was wondering which brand was better. Will be used for varmint shooting.

Also, I would like to get all 500 cases from the same lot, if possible. Is there anyone out there that sells brass this way? Some companies sell brass in 5 - 100 case bags.

Thanks

The reviews for Remington and Winchester brass are mixed however I shoot Winchester brass because I come from a long line of reloaders and that's just what we use. You should be able to buy 500 cases of brass at www.midwayusa.com ;)

John, If I were going to purchase either one it would be Win. I just recently purchased 100 pcs. of Nosler 22-250 brass and I am impressed with it. I also purchased the Nosler for my 7mm Rem. Mag and it is very consistant also. The neck wall is thicker on both of these calibers and that works better with factory chambers for me since I want to control neck tension. I hope this helps. Bill

It is all subjective. - The best brand is what you FEEL comfortable with using.

It sounds as if you are looking to buy new brass.

Both Winchester and Remmington brass will do fine jobs on you reloads.

I FEEL - that Winchester brass is a little easyer to size because the brass is softer, that may or may not be true) but it is what I FEEL. I FEEL that Remmington brass is the better buy because I FEEL it will last me longer with a greater number of reloads and is a stronger case, again may or may not be true)

You need to go to Cabela's or Gander Mt. and put a bag of cases of one brand in your left hand and the other brand in your right hand. Scan the prices for both and take 10 min reviewing both bags right there in your hands.

The bag you purchase and walk out of the store with IS the correct cases for you. You will FEEL it is the right choice and never look back.,Well almost never)

If you FEEL that neither of the two are right then go buy some Lapua or Nosler cases on line and don't worry about it because that is the right choice.

When I have done this I usually walk out with the Remmingtons.

Good Shooting

and yes they have 22-250 cases and you can check the lot numbers on the bags.

I tend to think there a little less "feeling" involved in the matter. I don't have much experience with either brand of brass, so all I can offer is a suggestion as to how to make some "objective" comparisons:

1. Buy a bag of each.

2. Visually inspect them all and see which brand has the highest number of flawed cases.

3. Measure the neck wall thickness for consistency using a tubing mic.

4. Pick out a sample set of ten or so and measure their internal capacity: plug the primer hole, weigh the case, fill with water to the top of the neck, and weigh the case full of water. You might want to add some sort of surfactant to the water to reduce the surface tension so that you can fill all the cases equally.

5. Buy four more bags of the brass that measured out the best and sell the other one.

Both brands of brass have a decent reputation for toughness. Winchester usually seems to get the edge in consistency.

I would suggest Norma Brass for your 22-250. I know it is $0.96 each a Bruno Shooter Supply, but it takes almost no prep, excellent primer pockets, flash holes, very even neck thickness, and I've never had one fail before 25 reloads. That puts the cost under $0.04 per shot for brass.

None better IMHO

My preference is decidedly in favor of Winchester given only those two choices.

I have found it was longer lasting, more consistent and far less "beat up" when bought bulk new.

I have found Winchester brass, namely .222 Remington and 6.5x55) to be more consistent in weight and length our of the bag, and has a lower failure rate. By failure rate, I mean the number of cases with splits at the neck or shoulder over a given period of time.

I do not anneal cases so the longer they last as is, the better.
