Remington numbers

I am looking for some info, i have a lead on a barreled action, a 722 with a douglas barrel in 22-250 AI.... they are asking 375... seems cheap..

so my question is.. 722 is pre 700 right? how where do the 40x come into play? and will like a hidden magazine from a 700 work? any info would be great thanks

Foot print is about the same. Bolts interchange but bottom metal won't without a little work with inletting. Basic difference in the two are trigger and safety( appearance wise). Cosmetically the 700s look better IMO, but function wise I believe they are the same. I have a trigger guard from a 721/722 and its different too. I think the 700 was built in the early 60s to present where the other two were up to the early 60s.

722 is a great action. Rear tang is a little beefier than a 700. If you want to run a 700 trigger, rear tang will need to be notched for safety lever. Minor procedure. Great actions though! I would not hesitate to run one. :D:D

721/722 were the Strongest actions remington made at that time. I have about five 721's could never find a 721 in good enough shape or I would have bought it. Check the lugs to make sure there not galled.

Also keep in mind that the 721/722 use a rivetless extractor which is different then current rivetless and cannot be interchanged. These extractors are usually tough to find and expensive. Most anymore I think either do the Sako conversion or an M16 type. Sometimes probably cheaper to replace bolt with a properly headspaced 700 bolt as they are interchangeable with 721/722'

When I was young and could not afford much, I lusted after a 725 in .280. It was a thing of beauty! When I later tried to buy a .280, Remington discontinued it. So I bought a .30/06 and had my gunsmith put a Douglas barrel on it in .280. Then Remington came out with the 7mm Express. Still have the "custom" rifle.
