Remington let me down, again.

So aside from getting a smith to correct it, I had a suggestion of windage adjustable bases. I do have the burris rings than I can put 10 moa in. Do 20 moa inserts for 30mm exist? I can only find them for 1" (last time I searched)

For some reason, Burris does not make either +/- .005" or +/-.020" inserts for their 30mm rings, but you can get approx. 20 MOA external elevation or windage (depending on ring spacing, this will vary somewhat) by using both pairs of the +/-.010 inserts that came with the rings. Refer to the instruction sheet on Burris' web site for details. As I recall, if you use the +10 insert on the right and the -.010 on the left of the rear ring and the opposite on the front, you will get about 20 MOA of left windage

+1 The Burris offset inserts could solve your windage problems. Or, could solve your elevation problems ( minus .010" front plus .010" rear. (total of 20 MOA) But can't solve BOTH problems because of the way they are configured.

The only problem is the windage. I can try zee rings I have. Like i did last time, but i forget how close to zero it actually got me. I'd rather it be where its supposed to be but if I'm chasing my tail with remington, I guess i'll try the windage bases if the rings dont do enough for me. I still plan on calling remington to find out why I got the same receiver back with no visible changes. Their notes tell me nothing. Everything on the gun is the exact same as it was. I have to assume they didn't fire with a scope on it... I'll see what they have to say Monday on the phone and go from there. I had much better luck with my 700 in 300 win mag so I can't fully knock them yet :o

About 12 years ago I bought a Model 7 Stainless Synthetic used in .308 caliber. The barrel and action did not line up. Tip of the barrel was a good 1/2 inch off line from the center bore of the action. You could remove the bolt, look down it and it was obvious. Remington says the warranty is to the original owner. However, I sent it back with a letter stating that this was the most egregious quality problem I had seen in a gun. They sent me a whole new gun with matching serial numbers and put "repaired" on the invoice. Didn't charge me a cent. I'm OK with that.

Best bet would be to have a smith mount the action up in a mill, find true center and Re-drill and re-tap the base screws to 8:40.

Take this advice. It works, it's cheap and you won't need to mess with offsets.

I'll have to call my smith and see what he says and weigh my options. If the inserts I already have get me close enough, which I doubt, I'd let it go.

What if you would mount up a set of 1 inch rings and put a 1 inch by 36 in piece of aluminum dial rod in the rings. This would tell you if the holes are in fact drilled off cent by where the end would be in reference with the muzzle. Just a thought.

In the past 20 years I've purchased two new Remington rifles. Both exhibited shoddy workmanship and showed no accuracy potential. I soon sold both rifles.

Remington blew it. At one time they owned the out of the box accuracy crown (among the US manufacturers at least). Now the 700 is just an overpriced shadow of its former glory. There are better options in this price range.

As far as Savage is concerned, I have a 12FV in .223. It would shoot 50 and 55 grain bullets through the target sideways at 50 yards. I also tried factory fodder. I sent it back to Savage and they said it shot .8" with Federal 77 grain Match. I bought the rifle for prarie dogs. Not 77 grain bullets. I am selling it. What about Browning?

About 4 years ago, I bought a Rem 700 5r .308 10th anniversery model. It shot so well, I bought 3 more. Then I tried one in .223. It's soso. I have a Browning X-bolt I'm trying to get to shoot better than 3" at 100. You should look at Tikka. When I was a Builder, I told my clients: You can have it fast. You can have it right. You can have it cheap. You only get to pick two of the three choices. I think I've finally reached the point where the only gun that will give me what I want is a custom, unless it's a collector piece. What's that saying? Buy once, cry once. If you think about the dollars involved, a custom is cheaper in the long run. Get a nice action and stock. Then get a good barrel made in your choice of caliber. If you want a change, get another barrel made in another caliber. Within bolt face restrictions, of course. Josh.

Well, I called remington after confirming it was off today. At 50 yards, I used ALL but 2-3 clicks of windage to bring me left. I had to hold to the right about 4 inches, to hit the bulls eye! So, I left and called remington, asked what was done to fix the rifle. He said, "well it doesn't say anything here other than test fired. Did you send it in because...grouping was off? It says pattern density was ok" I said, no, I'm sure it'll shoot great and it did, it was WAY left. Like all my adjustment left. "Oh, well, I can send them an email and asked what was done when they had the rifle and I'll email you when I hear back" Guess I get to wait again >:(

Millett makes windege adjustable rings I have used them quite a bit on Remington actions.
The rear base holes are almost always off center o the 700 series. They always correct the problem and they don't coat an arm and a leg.

Gun goes back monday. They pretty much confirmed they didn't use a scope. Gun works fired it, said it was fine and sent it back to me. I got a lady today that typed out word for word what I was saying, and she did nothing but apologize for the people that couldn't answer my questions the other times I called. She was a huge help, had me wit while she actually called gun works, twice, and got me answers.
