Remington customer service

My experience is dated to about 12 years ago.

Bought an 11-87 barrel. When installed, the firearm would fire, but not cycle. After troubleshooting it was discovered that the gas block was welded "cattywampus" (scientific term) thus binding the action. when I went back to local distributor for replacement, they pulled remaining three similar barrels for inspection. All had correct aligned gas block. However, two had NO GAS PORTS!!!.

When I called Remington I was told "Mr. (Snert) we make thousands of barrels a day, and sometimes we make mistakes". When I suggested that these were kinda serious QC issues, she said in effect "stuff happens". I responded that everyone, including myself, makes mistakes. The difference is most of us don't sell them. I did not buy a remington product till last week, after YEARS of being rabidly pro-Remington.

Six years ago twin brothers (close friends of mine) bought 700's in 270 WSM. One, when fired, showed extreme pressure with factory rounds (3 before he wised up). Inspection revealed no leade, rifling way short. Basically a zero freebore. YIKES!!! His experience with remington included a first offer of "sending a box of ammo", then a replacement rifle with a box of ammo. He accepted. The rifle they sent was a blem (marked right on the box!) and no ammo came. Recently the other twin's rifle went to a well regarded barrel maker for a new barrel, since it shot like crap too. Upon getting the rifle back, the smith asked if he could use the barrel as the finest example of the very worst barrel ever seen on a factory gun in his many years of experience. Maybe with the change in recent years they are better now...my contention is that customer service starts with QC.

That all said, I just bought a walmart 700 243 and after scrubbing out the goo they use to preserve it, I borescoped it. While it appears the mandrel they use on the hammer forge had dirt/debris on it (induced rough spots) it has a good appearing crown, decent rifling and a rough chamber. We will see how it is dimensioned///

I compared this new 243 barrel to a pristine safe queen 700 Varmint Special from 1981 in the bore scope. No significant quality difference, though the VS sure looks a butt bunch prettier!

all said, neither is a Hart or Krieger! And customer service is a crap shoot.

I have about the same problem as Snert's friend accept a 300 wsm. I guess I'll see what happens. I was told 3 or 4 weeks. It's been 3 weeks today. Maybe not much longer before it's back. Thanks for the response, I've been wondering.

I have been warned by a smith that factory WSm is sometimes HOT. I wonder if it is related to chamber/leade, throat "variables" in QC? Anyhow, good luck. I am working on loading for the newly barreled 270 WSM now. We shall see what a new quality aftermarket button barrel does for it.

I had a LVSF that the serial number on the bolt didn't match the serial number on the gun. Sent it in, had it back in 2 weeks. Thats it, no hassel.
That reminds me: I need to send have the sticky butt pad on one of my LVSFs replaced. Guess I'm about to find out about Remington service, although - from what I've heard/read -
they've mostly been pretty good about fixing that (common) problem.

I ordered 24 actions, no bolt, no bottom metal, no trigger. Got the ten Right hand, long actions and ten Right hand short actions within a week, got two left hand long actions three months later, still have not gotten the two left hand short actions it has be over six months.

When I sent in for mine it was as simple as giving them the serial number and your address. The only down fall to it was at that time, they were about 8 months back logged on getting those out. About the time I forgot about it, it showed up at my door step. Almost 8 months exact to the day.

I bought a R-25 in .308 about 4 years ago. Took it to the range to sight it in, and could not get it to group at all. It was all over the paper. Got it back home to check it, and everything was tight and good. Looked down the barrel with the bore scope and was very surprised. The barrel was pitted, and was in rough condition, never should have made it past Q.C.. Sent the rifle back to Remington, and after 3 months, they sent me a completely new rifle. This rifle shoots 1.5" groups, but the barrel is still in rough shape. I have 20 yr. old rifles with better barrels. Just ordered a new barrel for it from X-Caliber. Seems to me Remington is going through a tough time, I hope things get better. Not trying to bad mouth them, I have 8 older Remingtons that are great rifles, and will keep forever.

About 15 years ago I had a Model 700, 22 250 that would not group at all, 4 to 5 inches at 100 yards. My smith examined the bore and he determined that the rifling was damaged. I call Remington. The send me a free shipping label. I returned the rifle and in three weeks they sent me a replacement which shot very well. That was great customer services but bad quality control.

I've see some real disappointing recent vintage Remington's at the range in the past few years. Some had faulty extractors that would not allow a round to be chambered without forcing the bolt closed with factory ammo. Some would not extract and or eject. The new X-Pro triggers are horrible compared to the old adjustable Rem triggers. But I've also seen some out of the box 700's that shot under a minute. I think it's a roll of the dices. My older 700's are excellent rifles - wished they made them like they use to but from what I've seen the recent vintage 700's leave a lot to be desired.

If I was a younger man, just starting out in this game and intended to do a lot of precision shooting I would bit the bullet and have a custom rifle built. In the long run it would be cheaper and I'd get exacting what I want, a great trigger, a reliable extractor system, a twist rate that exactly matches my needs, a match quality barrel, and a stable stock. I would select a smith that stands by his work and will make it right if there's a problem.

Remington is undergoing a serious upheavel. They are getting out of the Ilion, NY plant and getting into a new site in Alabama( forget the town name) . In one case disgruntled employees over a pending shutdown and loss of jobs. In the other inexperienced employees in a new site. Between the crappy state attitude and oppresive taxes and regulations in New York who could blame them. Just be thankful they aren't outsourcing to Japan or some other country. I personally hope Remington can survive the change but it really must be difficult.

Bought a Remington 1100 in .410. The firing pin was off center. Called them and got a return authorization pre-paid label via e-mail. Sent the gun and within 10 days I had it back with a new bolt installed.

I love the service from Dakota Arms, now that the Remington Custom Shop was sent there.

  • Actually, Japan makes a pretty nice gun. I bought a Miroku made Winchester lever gun. It's nice and shoots.
