Remington 788 Trigger Stud Broke

I just finished putting a new Timney trigger onto the Remington 788 6.5 Creedmoor I built for someone and went to test the bolt release before putting it back in the stock and the trigger fell into my hand?

I was a little shocked for a minute and after saying some choice words started looking at the rifle wondering what happened. The trigger never went on hard and the old one came off easy so I started looking at the stud and to me it looks like a cheap cast piece. After doing some research I found others have had this happen with the stud coming off the action since it is silver soldered on to the action I never found one that broke in half.

I found a post by Gordy Gritters that he has had this happen and his fix was to drill and tap the action with a 1/4 inch bolt and mill it down to make a new stud. There were not any pictures of that fix so I am posting some in case some other smith runs into this.

Broken stud.

I drilled and tapped the receiver for a 1/4x28 bolt.

I took a Remington 700 Action screw and made the new trigger stud.

After adjusting the depth to get the trigger a nice fit and filing the stud down so the bolt would clear I used clear epoxy to make sure it does not move.

All done.

Sorry that some of the pictures are a little fuzzy.

Picture of the rifle in case anyone is interested. The picture is with the old trigger in it as I did not have the new one yet. The stock is the old factory 788 wood stock that I coated.

Dakor,

I reattached a broken rear action stud on a 788 in a similar fashion. I used the original stud and threaded the top of the stud and action in IIRC 32tpi as there was only about .100 in tang area. Silver brazed after installation.... probably stronger than original weld.

I know its an old post but the same thing happened to fine and I had a question did you drill all the way through or almost through and run a bottom tap. the lugs lock in this area thats why im concerned with drilling all the way through just seeing how this worked out for you thanks

I went all the way through and it worked well for me.

I've got a 788 stripped action here that has the same problem with the broken in half trigger stud. No bolt. Who needs a project? Make me an offer, lol.
