Remington 788 questions

I was wondering if any of you guys had some input on my new project rifle. It is a Remington 788, 22-250 with a douglas 26 inch heavy bull barrel. I was wondering what type of scope ring bases/base to use ? there is only one rear hole and two front holes to screw the base into.... suggesting that it was designed for a one piece mount. I see all different kinds of mounts including two piece.... do i need a one piece ? My other question is what kind of stock will suit this beast of a barrel ? I will be shooting varmints with it and will never be a carry gun. It currently is sitting in its factory stock and, the previous owner had to get rid of most of the entire width of the forend to make this one inch barrel fit into it. advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you

You could contact Stocky's and ask if your bull will work in the above stock.

I have a Ramline Synthetic on mine presently but am running the stock tube. I don't think you would have much left of the forearm if you opened it up to full bull.

Thank you, i like that mount. never seen EGW in my interweb travels ! I am still at a loss to find a stock that is going to be affordable. never thought of that when i bought it.

Howdy !

As an aside.... I've heard that a 788 can be retro-fitted with a Rem 541 trigger; which might help reduce trigger pull.

Just a thought.

I have that exact rifle, in the exact cal, and a big fat shilen barrel. I bought a Stocky's in gray laminate. For the price, ya can't go wrong.

Yes, I went with a one piece mount. As much as I worried about scope movement, it ain't happend yet. And Its been handled by airport baggage people to Colorado for P-dog hunts.
I got this 788 as a trade, and stuck it in the closet for years. One day pulling it out and working on it. It has turned out to be a good rifle for turning coyotes and critters inside out.

1+ on the EGW 788 bases 0 & 20 moa...i am selling a new Timney 788 trigger for $100. on this site..`Danny

With a little work by a good smith, a factory 788 trigger can have adjustment screws added and able to be taken down to a very crisp/clean ~1.25lbs. I have several 788s, a 6 rem with a Canjar trigger, a few with worked over factory triggers and a 582 (rimfire version of 788), and a timney. The worked over factory triggers are my favorite aside from the canjar, but those are like hens teeth nowadays.

Need to finish my bullpup 222rem, 788 soon.

Show Me Gunstocks in Missouri made me a walnut that was hogged out a little for a heavier barrel. Decent wood (I bought the cheapest walnut) and I'm very happy with it. They even left the bolt handle inletting uncut so I could cut a lefty notch. A replica 80% (?) stock but nicely done.

FYI, Show Me has a Facebook presence.
