Remington 788, in 6mm Remington rebarrel. General questions.

I'm looking to use a PAC-NOR prefit for my new barrel. Urban was gracious enough to answer a lot of my questions and suggested moving to a 6mm cartridge that uses less powder. In this day and age, that makes total sense to me.

I, however, forgot to ask what he would recommend based on 5 shot groups, 24 - 28" medium varmint barrel, 7.5 twist?, 103 to 110 pointy bullets, mostly 600 yd. (on in) informal target shooting and a concern for increased barrel life. I don't mind sizing brass, but really don't want to get into trimming necks or fire forming.

The skinny, sporter barrel just isn't getting it for 3 shot groups let alone 5. So, should I just stay with the 6mm Remington but in a heavier barrel and a faster twist or move on to something more modern based on the above? Any experience, you all can offer up would be appreciated.

The 6mm Remington, by some standards, is a barrel burner, especially when compared to the more sedated 6MM BR.

I would simply build a 6BR. Granted, you will not achieve the velocities with 100+ grn bullets as the 6MM Remington, but that 6MM Remington, in general, will not achieve the pure accuracy of the BR.

As for feeding from the magazine, I am sure some length modification would have to be performed to accommodate the much shorter cartridge.

Everything above.

Forgot to mention, that I load 'em one-at-a-time. Thanks, for the reply and suggestion.

Who makes a prefit for a Rem 788?
I doubt anyone. There is nothing complicated about the tenon.
I did one for a friend long ago. The thread is a 1 inch 20tpi, the end of the chamber is flat. The action face has a couple of notches that engage male notches on the recoil lug.

You have to relieve about 3/16 of the barrel end because there is no thread relief in the action. Factory barrels also have about a 1/4 inch wide cut away on the threads so there will be sufficient action screw engagement.
There is no reason why you couldn’t do a barrel nut set up on one. You could use a small shank Savage nut, just place the slightly larger Savage thread on the barrel shank.

So. . . for ordering purposes, when we are talking about 6mmBR we are talking about the 6mmNormaBR. Correct? Nobody on this Site's 6mmBR forum refers to it as the Norma but just 6mmBR when offering up load data and such. Just making sure which cartridge we are discussing before ordering.

Sorry but, I NEVER liked, the Rear locking Lug's for "Support" NOR, the POOR accuracy from, My 788, in 6 Rem.
Sold it years ago and I Only buy, L-H, Rem 700's or Tikka factory Rifles, Today !
And YES, the 6 XC is the "Easy Button" for, Feeding and, great LR, accuracy with,.. GOOD Barrel Life.
But, I'm opinionated and,.. "Spoiled" !
I'd be, a selling that, 788 in, a New York, Minute to.., a close range, Deer "hunter"

I really need to change the way I search for information. I queried the internet and the first, of a list, of posts sent me back to Accurate Shooters. I searched AS with no joy before I even went to the WWW.

Anyways, thank you very much for the quick reply. PAC-NOR had a 6mmbr and a 6mm Norma BR and I wasn't 100% sure what to purchase.

Also, thanks to everyone who commented on this thread. Novice out.
