Remington 788 6br?????

So I was in the gun room tinkering today and had an idea. For those of us old enough to remember the 788. It was Remington's budget rifle in the 80's. Mag fed with rear locking lugs. Not pretty but accurate. Anyway took a 6br case and held it in the bolt face while chambering ( I forgot- 788 carbine in 243) cycled the bolt and ejection was "vigourus". Then tried empties mag fed- not a hitch! I'm thinking of re barreling a 788 in 308 to 6br. Can anyone see a downside it this idea? I know bedding a 788 is a pain and timney makes a decent trigger for it.

788s shoot. Amazing actions, if you can get one to feed I think it would be a nice rig. Sounds like lots of potential. I've never seen or heard of it being done but that doesn't mean anything.

I think it is a splendid idea. Get a reamer with some freebore you can work with. You got plenty of room with that magazine. They might be a bit of a challenge to bed but can be done and they will shoot.

No problems but I wouldn't push it to make it something it's not. You probably already know why.
Exactly...if you plan to resell, you have a $700 barrel and a 300 dollar action, and a $150 trigger you can sell for $600...

I have a barreled up 788 6BR sitting on my bench I need to set in a stock for my daughter for a mid range F Open trainer.

SWD, Do you have a stock in mind? Aftermarket options are somewhat limited. I did look at the McMillan but was kind of thinking a really nice walnut would better fill the ticket.

I found a Boyd's Pro Varmint. I have a front tracking plate I'll put on it. Kind of a budget build. For her first CF rifle it'll do.

I have an old left hand 788 in 6 dasher. Works just fine. Went with a .104 freebore to shoot 95 grain vld's. Cant hot load the 788 action but if you have an action sitting around it would be a fun project.

I had a 22-250 in the 788 bought it cheap because the guy had 2 and it was an absolute POS. Barrel was rusted so bad I never even attempted to fire a round through it. So I did exactly what you did. Tested the mag with a 107 seated on a dummy round. Feeds absolutely flawlessly. So off to the smith it went. Had an 8 twist Brux medium Palma barrel finished at 30". It looked to nice to put it back in original stock so I purchased a tactical stock from Richards micro fit and cut glued and screwed pieces on the forearm and heal for bag riders. That old refurbished 788 was the rifle I shot my first 600 yard 200 score in f class with, followed by many more. Simple stupid accurate. I will say the ejection was typical 788 and would work flawlessly if you ran bolt speed just right. Do it and enjoy!

I thought I had the only 6 dasher 788!!
Soon maybe Ill have the only 30 dasher 788
PS mine is on the 22-250 action and its 2.41 mag length feeds like it was made to

I think that I purchased mine in early or mid 70's. Loved that gun. Could shoot bullet holes touching groups at 100. Didn't know squat hardly about reloading and certainly didn't have anything remotely resembling a decent rest. My eyes were better though back then. Mine was a 243. Would love to build a Dasher with one!

I just put a 6 br together myself for a field gopher-deer gun. 788 was 22-250, got a discounted richards microfit stock that didn't get cut for a mag. Put a 1-8 used brux cut to 20" and a can (for comfort in the field) still cant find the time to work up a load but it shows potential.
