Remington 7400 Accuaracy

I realize this is trying to put lipstick on a pig, but has anyone found a tip to make this rifle, in .308, shoot better than 3"? I know that you should try different brands or types of ammo. This is with Federal 180 grain, not premium.

If its shooting 3" at 100 yards consider yourself blessed. :o

Some say experiment with the forend screw tension.

Another outfit made a steel block that was installed between the forend and mounting point.

Suppose to work, have no experience with it.

Regards,

Steve

When I was a 'dumb kid' I had a 742 in 1958...short barrel model and I put an accuracy block in the front end! With match ammo the damn thing would shoot a consistent 2" ten shot group at 200 yards!! With handloads would do the same thing!

Now?? I hate to know I was that dumb....once!!

Even with working on the trigger....it was lousy!! I consider them good boat anchors....as long as you tie a cinder block attached!! :( :P

My first rifle was a 30/06 Remmy 742. Accuracy? Well I did kill a lot of deer out to about 75 yds in the woods. I don't trust it pass that for a humane kill. Still got it, haven't shot it in 40 yrs.

I got my first 742 when i was 16. Got it from my dad who bought it new in '61. It has kilt literally hundreds of deers- its never jammed a single time and has always shot under 2" off the truck hood. Ive had a few more over the years here n there and seen a ton of em on my range and i cant remember a single one ever shooting as bad as 3". Some jam, some dont feed but all are killers.

I had one as my first high power rifle, topped with a 3-9x40 Bushnell. With a variety of factory ammo, it grouped at best 2.5" @ 100 yds. I shot several different weights and brands of ammo to no avail. It also suffered a wandering zero despite verifying the mounts and scope, and would have ejection malf's every 50 rds or so. The trigger was SO BAD - the worst factory trigger I have ever pulled.

I really thought I was a horrible shooter, and wondered what I was doing wrong. I ended up trading it in for a Ruger M77 VT with a varmint barrel in 25-06. First time out with that rifle I had it zeroed in 4 shots and cranked out several sub-inch groups. Needless to say the poor accuracy wasn't my fault.

Now I have a 308 AR for a semi-auto hunting rifle. It is vastly superior to the 7400/742 that a comparison isn't even valid. Better ergos, accuracy, ease of use, durability, ease of scope mounting, need I go on?

I had the same thing. the problem is how ammo comes out of clip. it feed left than right. if you look at tips of bullets that have cycled you will see tips fouled up. mine would shoot no better than over 3in at 100yds when I put same load in one at a time rifle would shoot a hair over half in. I have checked and no one could fix that feeding problem. if you shot it as single shot it was great.

A few years back we had a couple of guys that were both shooting 308 7400s. They were hand loading and had groups smaller than and inch, and were trying new loads ever time I saw them at the range. The guns were synthetic stocked and had good optics ad all was looking good. Then one day the one of them tried a new load and had reloader 7 instead of reloader 15. There was nothing left to reuse, everything was ruined, scope, mount all of it. I think they both quite shooting, haven't seen them since that day.
