Remington 722 safety

Greetings all:

After setting the gun rack for about 25 years I pulled my Remington 722 .222 off for some exercise. I learned (found out) that the safety will not engage with the bolt cocked and closed. It will engage if I lift the bolt, engage the safety and then close the bolt. The safety will disengage normally.

Since it has been so long since I've used this rifle and no longer trust my failing memory I need to find out if this is "normal" or do I have a problem. Perhaps even a suggestion on how to correct the problem if I do indeed have one.

Don't know if this could be part of the problem but it may help. I have an old 721 that has this issue.

REMINGTON
MODEL 700,CENTER FIRE RIFLES MFG BEFORE 1982
MODEL 600, 660, 721, 722 40-X RIFLES MFG BEFORE MARCH 1982
MODEL XP-100 TARGET PISTOL MFG BEFORE FEBRUARY 1975

RECALL: Remington Arms Company, Inc. is offering a safety modification program for certain bolt-action centerfire firearms manufactured prior to 1982, including the Model 700, Model 600, 660, 721, 722, 40-X bolt-action rifles (made before March 1982) and Model XP-100 target pistols made before February 1975.

These firearms have a feature known as a bolt-lock that requires the safety to be placed in the “off” position in order to unload the gun. If you participated in this program, your firearm will be modified to eliminate the bolt-lock feature. The operation of your gun will not be otherwise affected.

If you want assistance, call Remington’s toll-free consumer hotline at (877) 387-6691. To learn more about the 1979 safety recall, check our website at www.remington.com.

TheSnake,

You nailed it! Called Remington (have been waiting for an email) on the phone and the gentleman that answered said the "trigger recall" was still in use. He gave me a gunsmith in OH that will swap out the trigger assembly for $20.00 + S & H. He added that the new trigger assembly (which does NOT lock the bolt) is a $100.00 trigger assembly. I suggest you sent them your 721.

The place in OH is: Sportsman's Haven, Inc. 740-432-7243

Many thanks.

Glad that was it. I am also glad they are still honoring the recall. Kind of a safety issue so I don't see how they could turn customers away.

I just ran into this on a buddy's 700. All you need to do is:
Remove the stock, remove the safety assembly from the trigger group, watch out for the detent ball, dremel off the dog leg tab and reinstall.
Won't effect any safety operation except bolt lock.
Or send it back to Remington.

One thing you will run into or the gunsmith,is the 700 trigger assembly with the 700 safety lever won't clear the receiver so some metal has to be removed from the receiver, also the 700 trigger will be very close to the rear of the 722 floorplate, sometime need to put a little more bend in the triggerguard .

CooperNV: I considered this an option prior to finding out that Remington will replace the trigger group for $20.00. Acutally, the guy at the OH gunshop said it would "be free unless he ran into a problem and then it would cost $20.00." Although I've done a lot of amateur gunsmithing the past 50+ years, I always consider trigger/safety modifications something to avoid if possible.

Terryb: I sent just the barrel/action to the OH gunshop.... no stock, trigger guard, etc., to save on shipping costs. Since the caliber is .222 the gunsmith said he could test fire it without this stuff. (Low recoil) When I reassemble I'll be looking for this trigger guard problem. Thanks.
