remington 700

has anybody heard that the remington 700 rifles have an issue with going off while closing the bolt? this was brought up today at work, 2 fellas said that in the 50's remington experienced this problem could have fixed it for .11cents per gun, and they chose not to. i have never heard this anywhere else, but figured i would ask those who would more than likely know over joe shmoe at work. to me this does not change anything i still plan to own 1 early this year but if there is a problem shouldn't it be easily fixed with a trigger upgrade?
i left this out sorry, apparently upon closing the bolt it would put pressure on the trigger and things would fail and the gun goes boom, now i don't know everything and don't claim to but is this very likely to happen without some sort of human error?

Gee, no. Never. I've never heard this claim before, completely new to me. Maybe some anti-gun news agency like CNBC should investigate it and report back to us, the consumers. You know, for the safety of the children.

Just run that subject thru the "search" feature on any of the forums and you'll get tons of opinion on the subject. CNBC ran a 'special' begining a couple of months ago. Still showing, check the Tv guide of your choice.

well the guy who said this is somewhat of a talker he likes for people to think he is an authority on anything and everything.
but i figured that with a company such as remington if there was a problem that .11cents would not be an issue fixing it.

research my name and you will see pages of posts.Every accident is linked to poor gun handling and yes it has been purported that they go off without warning and is usually linked to extreme filth inside the trigger or putting pressure on the trigger and removing the safety right afterwards.I am not saying there is no problem,but the muzzle should always in a safe direction and with any mechanical device there is always the chance of failure of a manmade part.I own a half dozen,and only own one old enough to have the old trigger and safety that has to be taken off to unload the chamber.

hey thanks for the reply, like i said i am not worried about this i was tuaght young to always keep any gun loaded or not pointed in a safe direction. i knew i could get the answers
i need here, i mean if you folks can't tell me about remington actions who could.

I agree with jonbearman 100 percent most gun accidents happen from poor gun handling or just not knowing.

I think a lot of problems come from people who insist that they can watch a video and that makes them a gunsmith. Not saying that is a factor in this thread at all, but it is easy for a person to get too aggressive with a Dremel tool

I was talking to Joe too, and he said that spurious statistics are up 44% this year. He also confirmed that Eddie Haskell died in Vietnam, and that the goofy buddy actor in 'The Wonder Years' grew up to be Marilyn Manson. Speaking of Marilyn and 50's era gossip, I heard she was involved with the Kennedys. Can you imagine such a thing?

Also, Janet Reno is really Stephen King with different trifocals, Hillary Clinton pees standing up, and that the Pontiac Aztec didn't sell because it had a bad name (instead of being f'ugly).

Friend, why listen to dip$h*ts at work? Get in your Corvair (or Pinto, or Ford Explorer circa 1999) and drive to a shooting match or three, and watch, and listen, and learn.

If you reduce the trigger spring weight on a factory Rem 700 below a certain adjustment, the firing pin drops as you close the bolt. Which is why the factory, for DECADES, has put lawyer lacquer on it, to discourage you from adjusting it. (It's easily removed, and the trigger is easily and safely adjusted by a meticulous, informed individual...)

Considering that the Remington 700 was first made in 1962 ... and the design was not around in the 1950's ... those fellas at work are full of the same stuff they are shovelin'.

The biggest issue I had with my 1965 Rem 700 was that the bolt was locked shut when the safety was on ... thereby making it impossible to unload the internal magazine while the action was on "safe". A quick trip to the gunsmith fixed that for free.

lol, you guys are great, i expected nate to say something about still having the shovel that buried the 2nd shooter in the kennedy case. i watched a video on remingtontv.com and i did not even catch it until just then but the 700 wasn't biult until the 60's, kinda hard to have a problem before the product was made. i heard the guys at work also say mr. rodgers was a war hero, pretty sure he wasn't from my searches on the web, but thanks for the info. most of the time i just let them talk and then i come home do some research and laugh at some of the stuff they say.

That's what I want...a rifle that needs a gunsmith to fix before it's usable. Do more research. Google Remington accidental discharge lawsuits. You'll find remington was no angel in this case and did sit on it for decades while denying no problem. There are zillions of these rifles in closets all over the place with the shooters unaware of a potential hazard and come on, these are your fellow shooters, eh? Is the potential risk not worth telling folks the TRUTH about how they may become hurt ? You will want to find out the things I've read before you take a case of @ss just because you feel someone is slandering your favorite toy. Upon further study, you may just change your stance on this touchy subject.

THEY USED THE SAME TRIGGER DESIGN ON THE 721 AND 722 FROM 1947-1962 AND THEN CAME THE 700 AND THE REST IS HISTORY. Sorry caps lock on.

Don't know, afraid taking that close of a look at one might ruin my eye sight! Thanks for posting, jonbearman. thought about it myself, then thought 'whats the use?' Same "Walker"design, slightly different construction.

If one does unbiased research, one will find that Remington Arms had a recall where the safeties would be corrected if found faulty. Do a search ....this topic was hashed out ad-nausium months ago when the MSNBC hit piece first aired.
