Remington 700 VTR Barrel? Does it work?

I recently saw The Remington 700 VTR at my local gun shop. I love the idea behind the Tri brl. You are basically getting the rigidity of a heavy brl without the penalty of the added weight. Great idea but........ Does it actually work?

So I am wondering if anyone here has one of these brls and can verify that it works like a hvy brl? I'm curious to see how well the public takes to these brls. So does anyone on this board own on of these brls and what do you think about it?

Scot,
I have one in a .308, I think it has around a 18" barrel. My son shot it in a 1K championship shoot in the 11 lb class because he wanted to shoot and that's all we had that would make weight with us. He didn't take home any gold but it shot just over a minute, I think it was around 12" 10 shot group with about 5 or 6 sighters before that, it got hot but he didn't DQ we were shooting 190 Berger's at about 2700 or so, it's no bench rest rifle but coyotes are in trouble out to 6 or 700 yards, it is what it is, more gimmick then anything but it shoots okay for what it is.

What the hell did you do to get it up to 11lbs? My god. The rifle comes in a 7.5lbs out of the box Are you strapping on lead rings, base and stock? ;)

weight limit

hahha...dont jump to conclusion.....just because he was shooting in 11 lb. class doesnt mean the gun weighs 11 lbs.!!!!! that is the maximum.....lots of guns in the 10.5-13.5-17-22 dont weigh the max.....most of the guns I shoot in the 17 lb class weigh 14 +/- a lil'......Roger

I was gonna say......

;D

My Rem700 comes in at 11.5 but that is because of the stock I have on it and the giant telescope I have chosen for optics. 8)

At a hundred yards or so the tri barrel will shoot with good handloads, sub minute of angle all day. I shot many groups around 3/8th's inch groups with 168 gr match bullets. Then my brillant future son in law sold it. I hope he reads this as he follows evrything I write. I really wished he would have kept it or I would have traded him something for it. In new york its like hunting with a bench rifle.

Scot,
Roger is correct, it was a 11 lb class or under, you could shoot a 1 lb rifle if you could get it that light, he shot it off a bi-pod so you have to count that and he used my S&B 5.5-25X 56 PMII which is a very heavy scope, all toll it weighed 10.4 lbs when weighed on there scales. As I stated for a factory rifle with a 18" barrel and shooting rather heavy 190's for that little .308 I thought it did quite well.

Scot,

I have one in 22-250. With handloads I have shot several 5-shot groups at 100 yards that a dime will cover. I love the gun except for the muzzle brake. It makes it more loud than what I prefer for a hunting rifle.

That was my next question. I kind of feared that might be the case. So how loud is it? Loud enough that I wont want to hunt without ear protection? Which ain't gonna happen. Meaning if it is that loud then I'm gonna have to take it off my list of rifles I'm looking at.

So how bad is it?

Scot,
Its just a gimmick don't fall for it like I did, you ask how it shot and I told you the truth, but I don't think they will shoot any better then any other 700 platform. If I were you I would buy a Tikka, I am not you and you don't like them so my next choice would be a Savage #12 and customize it to your liking, probably will out shoot some full blown customs, who knows :)

Scot-

a 22.250 with a std barrel is definitely gonna wreck your hearing if you shoot regularly unprotected but one with a brake will do the same a lot quicker.

Don't fool yourself your ears are safe with a "smaller calibre" or a "long barrel" like some guys do. I've fitted plenty of them with hearing aids..

Thank you all for the info. I was just hoping that I found a way that I could cheat the rules of accuracy in a barrel. By reducing weight without loosing rigidity and the brl harmonics and heating/cooling property of a heavy brl. I was hoping I could get all the advantages of a heavy barrel without any of the drawbacks. Mainly the added weight.

That damn golden goose.....I was really hoping it was real this time. 8)

I got to know how you are getting 2700 fps with 190 grainers safely. I can only get about 2650 maybe 2700 with 175's out of a 24" barrel safely.

I never hunt with ears on so I do believe that the Remv700 VTR is off my list of options for this project. If I could get it without the muzzle break then I'd be happy. But such is not the case.

boltman,
I don't think it is possible to get a 190 out of a .308 @ 2700 fps safely or not, just a typo error by me, thanks for the catch, they were running 2475 fps and were still doing 1396 at 1000 according to ballistic program, they were compressed loads I think I got them to about 2550 but they were really compressed and I was worried about pressure when it got hotter out.

Neighbor has one that he wanted me to work up a load for. I put it in a bedded Varmint walnut stock and started working up loads.

44.5-
-45.5g of VArget with a 168g matchking shot groups in the .400 range with a Weaver T-16 on it, tweeked trigger.

The most important thing that I noticed was how fast the barrel cooled, really increadible with a plus on the reduced recoil.

You only loose your hearing once, and sometimes all it takes is one shot. Its your to deal with anyway you want, but take a victims advice and protect it while you can. When its gone its forever. Larry in western Ky.
