Remington 700 VSF 308

Finally got to shoot my new target at 400 yds. Its an old tree cutter blade. Anyhow to the gun. Its a stock remington 700vsf in 308win. It has the factory hs precision stock with a trigger job done on factory trigger and some minor bedding. I am loading 175 sierras with 46.5 grains of varget and CCI br2 primers. Im getting 2840fps avg with an extreme spread of 6fps five shot string. I have achieved 1/2 moa and better all the way out to 1000yds with this gun. The guy that I shoot with and has been building guns for over 30 years said it is one of the best shooting 308s he has ever seen. This is a three shot group at 400yds on my new piece of steel. Thats a 2 inch bullseye. Group measured just under one and a half inches.

see thats what I am talking about.a good old factory remmy shooting like it should.

man I have to say that you are running alot of varget for a 175gn bullet.45gn is a compressed load from the Hodgdon book.are you getting really bad pressure signs?but hey if its working for you I guess its OK.for me I use 44gn of varget and get good results.and out of a 5R Milspec.

holy smokes, I have to crunh down 45 grains in a lapua case with 175's.and its flattening the heck out of my primers. Im sitting around 2700 fps. The other day i tried 45.3 and my groups opened up to at least 1moa. 45 grains puts me at base of neck, so 46.5 should be pretty close to top of neck?????

I have use winchester and federal brass mostly and some hornady match. Powder comes up in the neck a little on the wichesters and the federal and hornady fill up just past where the neck starts. Bolt handle is a little snug opening not bad at all though. Cases go back in and bolt closes with no problem primers are fine. The guy that I mentioned and myself couldn't believe that I was able to run that much velocity without over pressure but the gun handles it well. I started at 45.5 and went up in half grain increments. When I got to 46.5 the groups shrunk tremendiously and thats when the bolt got a little snug so I stopped there. I want to get some 208 hornady amaxes and try them with some reloader17.

I read one of your earlier post about you shooting someones 7-08 with 162gr hornady at almost 2900fps. I want the same brand of chronographs you guy shoot over.

Oldroper...
The guy with the 7-08 is the one i shoot with all the time. we have two different brands and he is the one that i mentioned on this post. I can run my 308 on the Sierra ballistics program and use the mentioned velocities and be dead on what it says so i can't be fudging there. The 7-08 is the same way. Thats why we use two different brand chronographs. So if you don't want to believe it come to south ga and we will prove it.

I run 46.7 varget in my lapua and it comes to the base of the neck. I shoot 155 scenars and I'm seating them at 3.348 @ ogive. Speed is 2770. w/no pressure signs.

WoW thats a lot of powder. My Remingtion 5R w/43.5gr Varget made tiny tiny groups out to 200 w/175s. I mainly shoot AR10s now and the same load for my 5R keeps the 175s snugged up at 200.
