Remington 700 VLS

Do any of you guys have a 700 VLS in a 6mm Rem? What do you think of it? I see that they have a twist rate of 1 to 9 and 1/8. What range of bullet weights would I need to be shooting out of it?

Don't have a VLS, but have been shooting a 6mm Rem/700 BDL for a long time. It whacks critters from ground squirrels to mule deer with authority. For small exploding varmints, I really like the various 75 grain flat-base hollowpoints, although the 85 gr HPBT Sierra works well too. Just not as explosive.

For deer the 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip is excellent. I also like Nosler's 100 gr Partition and had good results from Speer's old 105 gr soft point too.

I have one that's one it's 2nd barrel. It is my "long-range" pdog rig, and using 75 grain VMaxes I've killed pdogs with it out to 740 yards.

With the factory barrel, I loaded 37.5 grains of Varget at a plodding 3050 fps, and it was very accurate. With tne new Krieger barrel, I found it likes speed. My pdog load now is 49 grains of H4350 pushing 75 grain VMaxes at 3,670 fps. It makes 500 yard pdogs practically a no-brainer and 600 isn't much more difficult, given good wind conditions.

I am not recommending the 49 grain load without a careful work-up. This is safe in my rifle, with no pressure signs at all, but definately on the high side in my buddy's similiar rifle that was chambered with the same reamer by the same smith.

My rifle shot well,.6's) out of the box. I've had most of the tweaks done to it, including trigger replacement and bolt innard replacement, got rid of the ISS system) and it now shoots in the low .3's when I can catch good wind conditions, and better than that often enough to know the rifle will outshoot me.

I've had a 700 bdl vs for the last 20 +years in 6mm rem. you can't go wrong with this gun. Mine on it's 2nd barrel. It's geat on longrange pdogs, 1100 yds last year using 55gr noslers with 47grs of varget or 87gr vmax's with 46grs of IMr4350.

Will the factory remington barrel with the 9 and 1/8 twist stabilize the 55 grain bullets? I would prefer to shoot the lighter bullets between 55 and 70 grains out to 500 yards. My ballistics program says that the 55 grainer will be the best contender in the wind if launched around 3800 fps?

I have had pretty fair results with 55 NBT's pushed around 3900 fps from mine. I've not tried 1K with 55's, but the one time I tried it on paper at 800 yards, with the original factory barrel) it grouped into 6.75", in a slight full value wind.

I had "fair" results at 1K with 95 NBT's and RL22....about a 13" group, if I recall correctly. Not too shabby for a rig that was still in factory trim at the time. I've not tried that distance since the rifle's been tweaked. 1K shooting is a lot of work, as it turns out.....;)

If you're talking about varmints beyond 400 yards, choose a bullet with a high BC that will expand upon impact. Target & VLD bullets have fantastic ballistic coefficients but lack the *splat* effect on varmints of the rodent persuasion. I ultimately chose to go with the Hornady 87grain V-Max,BC .400) and that bullet is deadly at long distance...especially when pushed by a 6mm Rem case.

I have the Rem VLS in .243 Win, The 9 1/8 twist will stabilize bullets up to 100 grains round nose easily. It is length more than weight that affects stabilization, heavier bullet in the same caliber is generally longer). Some of the light copper alloy bullets don't shoot well because they are too long. Mine shot the 105 gr VMax ok, and would shoot 100 gr round nose and spire points just fine. IF you can find tungsten core bullets in 6mm then the weight it will stabilize goes up because tungsten core bullets are denser and therefore shorter for the weight.

The VLS didn't like the 100 gr Grand Slam nor does it like the VLD bullets much above 80 grains. For wind bucking capability try using the Hornady 87 gr VMax, the 70-90 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, the Sierra Blitzkings, or the more custom bullets like Berger or BIB in the 80 gr range.
