243 Win. maximum deer range

Kodiak,

Listen, I am not interested in your apparent endless knowledge. So to call me unethical for deer hunting with a 243, kiss my ass. I'm not interested in killing a deer at long ranges with it. I have other guns that will do that. Bye the way, did jb77 send you that flannel shirt, I want my bestest hero to be nice and comfy too.

I'm not saying it is unethical. I hunted with a 243 for years myself, but at Short Range distances,Point Blank to 500yds). The hunting regulations say 6mm or larger in Canada. Heck you can shot an elk or moose with one if you get in close enough. But for LR hunting,800yds and on), NO. 308 or larger min. And no, still waiting on my shirt HA! No worse, we have thick skin in Canada eh and I will not utter profanity on a site, you should think about that one mate. You were the one that asked how far can ya' dump a deer on it's a$%. I told you the distance. A statement like that implies distance! Best I can do for ya Matt Horn ... is tell you to get in close to your deer, stalk it, and to press said a$% that needs kissing firmly to your monitor and hop on this one

Kodiak,

I'm confused... would "THIS ONE" be of the .243 caliber? or something bigger since it's coming from up there north of the border? :D

My longest deer kill, 400 yds, 6BR/105 amax, 2850 mv. Double lunged, deer stumbled 25 yds dropped.

I'd happily shoot to 500 yds with long bbl 243, top loads, high bc bullet, IF I were practiced that far and had the gear to do it, scope with knobs, rangefinder, etc., and UNDER Ideal circumstances.

My longest deer next to that was 275. I don't/haven't shot extreme long shots, but can appreciate the handful of skilled shooters who know what they are doing.

Enjoyed all the posts.

We shoot the same gun. Two years ago, I loaned my cousin the rifle in Kansas to kill his first deer with. I rattled in a buck to 320 lasered yards. Shooting a 100g Hornady BTSP with 42.3g of IMR 4350, Rem case, WLR primer, bullet touching the lands the rifle shoots clover leafs at 100 yards.

We had a Bushnell 4200 4-16 on the 243 with the tiny target knobs marked to yardages to 400 yards. We got the yardage on the deer with the Lica range finder and dialed up the scope to 300. The deer was facing us, kinda half quartering. At the shot, the deer stood there, took two steps and fell over. The 100g Hornady Broke the right shoulder, and was under the hide in the middle of the rib cage on the off side, with a perfect mushroom.

We have killed many hogs and deer with this same load and bullet. If you want the ultimate performance out of your 243, try this load and also a load of 43.0g of IMR 4350 with the 95g Nosler partition...you will never feel the need for a larger gun on deer or hogs.

Good luck!

I have an "A" bolt in 243 and with a Barnes 85gr BTXLC,it shot right through an antelope, both shoulders) at 396 yds.Plenty of punch at that range, on that size critter.

Almost 100% of the time a rifle will dispatch game further than we can shoot! simple statement how far is max range? depends on the nut behind the trigger. take you some of those nifty little 6" paper plates, find you a good place that you can simulate field conditions and take 3 rounds and fire into the first plates at 100 yards, pretty easy to get them all in there right? now do the same until you can't get all 3 in the little plate. You can put all 3 in the plate at 400 but only get 2 in there at 500 dang the luck but hey can't win them all! do this little trick 3 times on different days and if you can only put 3 in the plate every time out to 300 yards there's your answer! if you want to shoot further PRACTICE MORE. This little trick is good for practice and will let you know where you should stop, yeah a 6" plate is smaller than the vitals on a deer but why not miss smaller just in case you screwed up on you ranging or doped the wind at 3 mph and it's 7 mph? no reason to wound that trophy buck and him go off and die in some tangle and be out of the gene pool that would not make me a happy camper! just wait til next yea after some practice or learn to sneak up a bit closer ;-) Later,

Kirk

hey kodiak99317, do You really shoot a 1/4 inch groups at 700 yrds consistently??? or was that a typing mistake???? I only ask because I have shot L.R.M for years and have never seen anyone or heard of anyone shooting groups like that. Just asking

Duke, I question your claim that you have "shot L.R.M for years" if you do not know 1/4 inch from 1/4 moa at 700 yds??? or was it a reading mistake??? Just asking.

Hey Kodiak, I did not mean any offense in what I said, I did word that message poorly, sorry for that, and yes i did misunderstand what you said, I was thinking MOA grouping. My apologies.
